21K Mile One-of-One: 1990 Ford Mustang LX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

It’s almost meme-worthy at this point how some enthusiast circle demographics are prone to looking at every last production detail to assess the rarity of their car. The classic one is the C5 Corvette owner, and while it is somewhat exaggerated at this point, it’s hard not to chuckle at the idea of someone drilling down to the day it was manufactured and how this impacts its production numbers. Regardless, it does matter to some collectors, and the seller of this pristine 1990 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 coupe claims it is a one-of-one based on the production data from the Marti Report. Find it here on craigslist for $29,250.

Thanks to Barn Finds reader Tony Primo for the tip. To some extent, you need every advantage you can find when it comes to selling in a down market. And regardless of the hyperbole, this sort of data does matter to collectors of American muscle cars. After all, they made a ton of Fox bodies, just like they manufactured loads of C5 Corvettes, so every advantage counts. This Mustang came loaded from the factory with a somewhat rare black interior, automatic transmission, a power sunroof, a premium stereo, black body-side moldings, and the 3.27 Traction-Loc rear axle.

Those unique features may all add up to a one-of-one car, but it’s really the incredible preservation-grade condition that catches my eye. Unlike other sellers who rely heavily on these production stats and do nothing for the presentation, my hat is off to the seller for providing a highly invasive approach to proving the merits of this Mustang. Despite living in Canada, it shows zero signs of rust or any evidence of being driven in foul weather. The undersides are pristine, as is the interior, and the seller confirms the only non-original part is a replaced cat-back exhaust system. It also apparently received a full Rust-Guard oil treatment underneath when new.

The 5.0L and LX trim combination is one of my favorites in the world of Fox bodies, giving it a very subtle “sleeper” tint. The engine bay is as clean as the rest of the car, and the seller confirms that all manners of stickers, crayon markings, and other details that often go missing over time are all accounted for. So, yes, enjoy the street cred that comes with owning a true one-of-one, but buy this Mustang for the incredible state of preservation it continues to remain in all these years later. It’s top-of-the-market pricing for a non-GT or Saleen car, but it does look like one of the best. Do you agree with the logic behind owners determining how rare their car is?

It’s probably US dollars, it was sold new in Canada, but the Craigslist as is for Dallas, the map in the ad shows it’s in Florida, which the foliage in the background of the video backs up.

Being a life-long Floridian, I immediately thought that looked like a Florida driveway. Not very far from me down in Ft. Lauderdale. I owned a LX 5.0 back when they were current. My nostalgia isn’t 29 large strong.

        Very Rare Black Interior, really?
        I Vote No.

Rare? Because of a black interior? OK…The lack of a 5 speed makes this less desirable, in my book. I had almost the same ’90 LX. Sans the sunroof and automatic. The only bad thing about the car was no tilt wheel available, due to Ford installing the drivers air bag, in a rush. I gutted the catalytic converters and retuned the engine. Just the sound of that car was worth the price of admission.

Your book, and everybody else’s. These are worth significantly less money with the automatic. And major bummer it got the obligatory Flomaster treatment. You have to say that’s period correct though because by 1990, pretty much all of these 5.0 Mustangs got them on their way home from the showroom. One of the most effective marketing campaigns of all time.

“Power sunroof’? Hmmm, I’m not aware of Ford offering one on Mustangs then. The only option that comes to mind, and it may be gone by 1990 are to T-tops.

The Marti report debunks the “power sunroof” claim.

The listing never mentions power “factory sun roof, power windows”.

The author of this article included “power” by simple mistake.

Nice Fox. It’s refreshing to see one in stock condition, down to the original markings. The 1 of 1 notation is certainly correct thanks to the Marti Report, but to me it doesn’t add much to the story. I’m more interested in powertrain/ paint and interior color combinations as to rarity.

I’m impressed. The door map pockets aren’t even sagging. If this is almost thirty large my 1991 LX 5.0 in fair condition should be worth twelve.

It’s sure in beautiful condition but that auto kills it for me. His video is 5 months old so not sure if he’s listed this before somewhere else. I think $30k might be pushing it for a auto LX, even with the condition it’s in. Personally, if I was to get a fox body Mustang I’d rather have a SVO.

Owned a ’90 LX 5.0 vert for 13 years so am not against these, but at current pricing I just don’t see the point. Their appeal was V8 fun on a low budget and as such owners could overlook the questionable aesthetics, cheap interior, lousy brakes and flexible chassis. Or choose aftermarket fixes. But today you wouldn’t mod a car this original and hurt its “value” even though stock they aren’t that great especially with the automatic.

An S197 Bullitt Stang can be had for $17-18k these days and seems a much better buy than a $29k Fox. As does an even cheaper SN95 Cobra or Mach 1. $29k (or less) would also buy a ’65-’68, which at least looks like a Mustang. No need to overpay for a Plain-Jane Fox, though that appears to be the trend now.

The one of one or the ”rare” cars is the silliest thing I have ever heard of. I own 3 Toyota Camrys, 1 Nissan Altima, and a 2013 Duramax Chevy. They are ALL one of one!!!! They each have a vin number that no other vehicle has. How is that for rare!!!!!! Worth a million bucks each? I think so. I am going to post them all for sale. I will probably only sell one and save the others for retirement. How many people do you know with FOUR one of one autos?

That is almost exactly my car. Mine is a ’93 with a five speed though.
