24K Miles! 1953 Chevrolet Canopy Express

When Barn Finds reader Larry D. alerted us to this cool 1953 Chevrolet Canopy Express listed for sale here on Hemmings.com, I had faint memories of us having featured one before despite the extremely low production of this specialized model. In fact, we have posted about seven GM Canopy Expresses in the past (and one Dodge), but this one seems to be the best of the bunch! It’s located in Mobile, Alabama with an asking price of $39,000 or best offer.

The Canopy Express trucks were obviously aimed at a specific customer and filled that spot in the lineup admirably with both covered and open storage configurations. This one is said to have less than 24,000 miles and truly looks the part. The truck has been awarded the prestigious Historic Preservation Original Features certificate from the AACA, reflecting it’s terrific and largely original condition.

With mileage that low, it’s not surprising that the drivetrain is 100% original and the rare truck is said to run and drive very well. The seller has prepared magnetic signs to display on the truck at shows but obviously you could replace those with your own.

Even the underside of this truck shows it to be in nice, original condition! You won’t find many of these at all, let along one this nice. What would you display in the bed? Personally, I think it would be a great vehicle to sell auto parts and accessories or die-cast models from at car shows! Have you ever seen one of these rare trucks in person?

I agree Jamie, it would be a great vehicle to sell auto parts and accessories. And it would be a hit at the farmers market now that they are back. But at 39K you might have to be selling something under the table to cover your cost. A great truck indeed!

Growing up in Brooklyn N.Y. There was a man that drove around in one of these. He was a grinder. He would come around once a week and sharpen knives, saw blades while you waited in. Did it in the back of the truck while you watched.

For many years there was one of these at the Aloha Hive summer camp in Fairlee Vermont. I was also low mileage with mint original green paint as it was only driven summers. Is there any way to share an image as a non-member?

When I was a kid we had a farmer come around selling produce door to door. His was black as I remember. It was the only caopy express I have ever seen until now especially in this condition what a treat to see another….thanks

It would be a great “medicinal herb” truck!
