The 10th generation Ford Thunderbird is chronically overlooked within collector car circles. It’s a shame, too, because the big coupe model with a powerful V8 and rear-wheel drive is a segment we’ve seen survive and evolve, even as mainstays like the station wagon and sedan categories have continued to diminish. At the time, however, a large V8-powered two-door was not exactly a hot segment. This 1993 Ford Thunderbird listed here on craigslist shows just 26,000 original miles and is equipped with desirable features like the 5.0L V8.
Of course, it was likely a bit of a feat in the first place that the Thunderbird had survived as long as it had up until that point. Sport compacts and high-performance imports were popular among gearheads, while the luxury segment was rapidly adopting SUVs as the vehicle of choice. The Thunderbird was the last of a bygone era, and while the redesigned 10th-generation coupe was quite attractive and placed an emphasis on driving experience over all-out performance, the writing still appeared to be on the wall. This car is an absolute treasure thanks to its low mileage, which results in a minty-fresh interior like you see here.
One thing I love about low mileage cars of any sort is how pristine the instrument cluster is. The glass is crystal clear and the gauges show the same level of color and vibrancy they did upon leaving the factory. It’s a detail that is near impossible to match on vehicles that have average miles on the clock. As I said earlier, we’ve now seen a reemergence of big coupes with powerful engines in cars like the Infiniti G37 and the Dodge Challenger, two models the Thunderbird would have slotted perfectly between. It’s a shame the generation we see here didn’t continue to evolve.
In 1994, Ford would transition to the 4.6L Modular SOHC V8, so this example represents the final year of 5.0L power in the Thunderbird body. With such low miles, this car will be dirt cheap to maintain for years to come. In fact, even at $11,000, it represents outstanding value as a car you can drive every day and likely just perform fluid changes for the foreseeable future. While I do think it is worth every penny, a lower offer is likely more realistic given the limited market for this cars currently. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Barney for the tip.
