Who doesn’t like a bargain? I do, especially when it concerns vehicles. In this case, it’s cars, all four-door sedan versions of AMC’s Hornet in either 1975 or 1976 varieties. The seller has them posted here on craigslist in Lacey, New Jersey and they’re asking $3,000 for all three, or $2,000 for the Silver Dawn Metallic one. Thanks to ol’ 3-for-1 Pat L for sending in this tip! Here is the original listing.
Here’s the one that the seller wants $2,000 for if a buyer just wants one of these Hornets. I’m not sure what this means, but they say that the “gray” one – faded Silver Dawn Metallic – has a title, the other two cars “have some paperwork from other states.” There were basically no real changes to the exterior of the 1975 to 1976 Hornet as AMC had the Pacer that they were marketing heavily at the time.
Here’s the last of the three Hornets for sale here, also a four-door sedan this time in Dark Cocoa Metallic. This was a very small photo so it’s pixelated here, sorry about that. As almost always, the photos are an unusual mix of sizes and qualities and there are no engine photos at all or even a mention of the engines and there are only three interior photos. Fun!
Here’s the right-rear 3/4 shot of the Caramel Tan car and it looks great other than some rust or former bodywork behind the rear wheel. AMC came out with the Hornet in the fall of 1969 for the 1970 model year and they made them until the fall of 1977. The following year, the company introduced the Concord which was based on the Hornet but was a nicer, quieter, smoother car. Make my Hornet a 1971 SC360, please. Or really any of them, they had some cool body styles for those of us who are into blocky cars as seen in the 1970 lineup.
Here’s the tan car’s interior and it looks good from what we can see. It’s unfortunate that they didn’t include more photos than just one front seat photo of this car and two front seat photos of the silver car. I’m not quite sure which car this photo relates to, maybe the tan car before it was cleaned up? Who knows. This is the driver’s side of the tan car and this is the driver’s side of the silver car. There is rust to deal with on maybe all of them, who knows.
The engines should be AMC’s 232 or 258 cubic-inch inline-sixes with 100 to 110 horsepower since they list “6 cylinders” and they say that all three cars run so that’s good. Truthfully, three decent-looking AMC Hornets from the mid-70s for $3,000 seems like a great deal to me, how about you?
I live about 90 miles away, but I’ve never checked this one out. This same ad has been running off and on for about 2 years. The pessimist in me says there must be something peculiar about it, because it sure seems like a super deal. I hope it’s legit. I might even go check it out since it’s now on BF.
You should check it out Ken if you are that close. Let us know how it goes. If you were going to run a scam, I’m sure that you would use something more enticing than a 4 door Hornet!
I disagree. If you were running a scam, then this is perfect because of just what you said. People expect a scam for a great hemicuda for two grand, but here they expect a bland person with no interest or is ignorant of the value. They grab your three grand and run. People are quicker on low value stuff like this. Not every great con artist swings for the bleachers when many single base hits also gets the job done.
Scam, pure and simple. Maybe just simple bait and switch, or maybe something worse. Too bad, as they look like nice little cars.
If you rob a hot dog cart with a gun and get $50 or rob a bank with a gun and get $50,000 the sentence is still the same. This looks legitimate to me. You don’t meet a guy in a parking lot to sell him three cars, you meet him on your property.
“Some paperwork from other states 📝”
I’d wager what this is,,is someone went to a municipal auction, and bought all of these. These cars were very popular with city managers, inspection people, post office,, my late ex-FIL was an elevator inspector for the state of Wis. and he drove a 4 door Hornet. Put a ton of miles on it. I think the Hornet, in all it’s forms, was the most popular AMC car. This is a great find, albeit the crummy listing,,,typical of someone with little or no interest, not sure why you would need 3 running Hornets, certainly enough parts to make one nice one. This is the way to do it today, buy the whole kit and kaboodle.
I think you are right, as is almost always the case.
The gray ones rough, but, if they all run and the rust isn’t bad buy them. And then you have daily drivers for the next ten years. Way cheaper than a 30k 2010 Accord.
“Honey, I think I’ve found the perfect graduation presents for the triplets.”
Nice trio there. If it were legit, I”d buy ’em all, keep the best one, and sell the
other two. Besides, I don’t think the girls
would let me keep all of them. Tagging
and insuring all three here in Florida would probably be a nightmare. One of
them would be ideal for my niece to take her driving test in. Looks like all of
them would clean up well, but as I said,
I can keep only one.
If I had the space, these would already be in my driveway
Ken says the same ad has been running off and on for two years. So in all that time, no one has grabbed this “bargain”? Can you say “huge red flag”? Unless you are flat out in love with Hornets from the ’70s, I’d say spend your 3 grand elsewhere.
Old post I know but I am actually the new owner of the burnished bronze one pictured here. Crazy to see something written about my car lol. I had the same “scam” thought and talking to the guy it just got worse and worse until I actually met him. Apparently he rents his collection to movie studios, and now that I’ve seen his stored 20 or so old vehicles I absolutely believe it. Nice guy though, managed to get it for $1000 due to it being untitled. I didn’t have the space or a way to transport all of them. The gray and brown ones are still available, I’ve seen the ads up on CL. I personally would’ve liked the gray just for looks but the bronze appeared to be in the best condition of the three. It’s been a project since day one, but mostly cosmetic. Body rust, worn paint, cracked dash, pretty much what you’d expect from a 50 year old car. But they do all run I can tell you that. Still doing some work when I have the free time but it’s a fun learning experience.
