350 V8 4-Speed: 1968 Chevrolet El Camino

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chevrolet introduced the El Camino in 1959 in response to Ford’s Ranchero which came out two years earlier. The transport took a hiatus after 1960 but returned in 1964 based on the new Chevelle platform. As a “gentleman’s pickup,” it soldiered on through 1987, usually outselling its Ford competitor. This 1968 edition looks well-kept with some modifications, but it may not carry original equipment under the hood.

The Chevelle was redesigned in 1968 and with it the El Camino, as well. The front clips were interchangeable, but the rest of the vehicle was a modification of Chevelle’s station wagon. Chevrolet built 27,762 El Caminos in 1968 of which the majority had a V8 engine (26,690 copies). The seller’s car has a 350 cubic inch V8 which has had some upgrades. But it may not be original as the 350 wasn’t available until 1969 (in 1968, I think it was exclusive to the Camaro). The 4-speed manual transmission is said to work well, so this is a nice driving machine.

The body, paint, and interior all look to be in tip-top shape, though I wonder if the orange is a color change. From all indications, this Chevy should be a turnkey vehicle and can be both a Cars & Coffee entry as well as a daily driver if you need to haul stuff. Upgrades include a 4-barrel carburetor and an electronic fuel pump. The pickup has both power steering and power brakes. The claimed mileage is 131,000, so a lot of stuff should have been replaced or rebuilt by now.

As the story goes, the seller bought this El Camino as a birthday present for his/her son. Perhaps the offspring didn’t like the gift, and the seller is looking to replace the Chevy with a conversion van for camping. So, trades will be considered if you have one to upload. Located in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, this “Ute” is available here on eBay where active bidding has reached $10,400 with no reserve.

Good looking Elky, I don’t see any rust, the body appears straight and it has a 4 speed, very nice!!!. All the work on this ride appears neat and tidy, but what is up with that gas tank? I would install a new fuel tank, fill it with gas and drive the wheels off this one.

That gas tank mod was pretty common for 1/4 mile drag racing to eliminate fuel starvation when the light turned green . Very nice el Camino, I hope it goes to someone that will enjoy it and treat it well. I wish that was me .

The 350 debuted across the Chevrolet line in 1968. I had a ‘68 Nova SS with the L48.

Not exactly. In 1968 it was only available in the Camaro and Nova SS’s, 1969 was the year the 350 became available throughout Chevrolet’s lineup.

Four speed with a bench seat? The middle passenger better watch second and fourth.

Ah c’mon. We used to ride three up in my 79 MG Midget. The girl sitting half on the hump and half on the other passenger shifted with her left hand. we got pretty good at it.

The auction has ended, the seller likely took an offer to end it early.
