350 V8 Survivor? 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The 1972 Chevy Chevelle was the last year in the car’s second generation (that had begun in 1968). A whole new design was coming in 1973, featuring the “Colonnade” styling that would be shared by all the other GM mid-size cars. The ’72 Chevy Malibu was little changed from the ’71 edition, with the front turn signals being the easiest way to tell one from another. The seller has a spotless 1972 Malibu Sport Coupe that looks as nice as they come at 86,000 miles. Located in Tacoma, Washington, this triple-blue Chevy is priced at $38,000 here on craigslist. Another nifty tip brought our way by “Curvette.”

Launched in 1964, the Chevelle was one of the GM division’s best-selling cars and would achieve a second-best showing in 1972 out of all U.S.-built automobiles. Noteworthy for all ’72 vehicles was that the horsepower rating was now stated in SAE net terms, meaning the engines appeared to be less powerful. The 350 cubic inch V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor (like the one in the seller’s car?) was now rated at 175 horses, whereas the 1970 version was 250.

Sales of the ’72 Malibu Sport Coupe remained strong at 212,000 units. Of those, more than 207,000 came with a V8 engine, meaning the inline-6 was an anomaly at less than three percent of installations. The seller is light on details regarding his/her wares, and the photos provided are few. We’re told it “drives like a dream” and has never been modified, so we assume we’re looking at a turn-key classic purchase.

This car has a lot of the attributes of a Super Sport, including a bucket seat interior with console and a blacked-out grille (perhaps done by the seller or a prior owner). Everything here appears to be ship shape, from the sheet metal, paint, vinyl top, and matching interior. This car is too nice and too pricey to be an SS clone candidate (IMO), and we hope the buyer leaves it the way it is, Rally wheels and all.

Beautiful Malibu, the only things I would change is add a passenger side mirror and the correct sport steering wheel for that year.

Most likely a 2 bbl, but hey! It has A/C! Great looker, but I just can’t fathom $38K. Just proof positive that Barrett-Jackson & Mecum have spoiled the hobby for regular folks.

Nice car but 38.000 is just crazy that is very nice SS money.

It looks ok in the few pictures provided, the description is lacking. If you want to ask close to double what is likely its market value, put in some effort. The bucket seat floorshift interior is a plus.

Wow, when my wife and I were dating she drove a ’72 identical to this one, except it had a bench seat. Sharp car, good power. But it spent it’s life in the rust belt. Her Dad cosigned for a loan for a new car,we went to swap towards the new one. I pulled the car up to the dealership and did a brake stand with it, then parked it. A few minutes later the salesman came out and pulled the plates, which got transferred to her new car……an ’81 Chevette lol

Nice Chevelle, great color, bucket seats and factory A/C…but asking $38,000? Apparently, drug use is common in Tacoma.

NIce Cool Car! My fav body style with dual tail lights like Corvette tail lights. I’m thinking SS Chevelle for $38k. Just a standard Chevelle with 2bbl 170 HP motor. SAE ratings in ‘72 downgraded HP ratings.
    A solid Chevelle!

20k max at least someone didn’t ruin it making it into a SS clone then ask 40k for it , lol
For 38 I’d rather look for a big block monte carlo around same year like used to have

It kills me that I had a ’72 with AC and sold if for $4K in 2002, just bought a house a few years before, needed a new roof and such, so I did what I had to do and sold it :(, if I knew that they would command such money I never would have sold it lol

Beautiful Malibu. Should be wearing 6 slot 14″ rallyes and not the 5 slot 15″s we see here. If we want to be all survivor correct and everything.

Very nice Chevelle here. I have a 1971 Chevelle since 1989. I would add the passenger mirror dual exhaust, and remove those floor mats and steering wheel cover. Price is too high maybe around 18k- 20k tops.
