360/4-Speed: 1973 AMC Javelin AMX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The owner of this 1973 AMC Javelin AMX says that it is not perfect but that it is still an appealing car. It is an older restoration that has held up well and is a car that would turn heads wherever it goes. He has decided that the time has come to part with the Javelin, so he has listed it for sale here on eBay. It is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and with the bidding at $18,801, the reserve has been met.

The owner lists the Snow White Javelin as having been ordered with the optional Go Pack, which may or may not be accurate. This is hard to determine because there is nothing in the VIN or other tags to verify this. The only way to confirm it is to get your hands on the Window Sticker, Dealer Order Form, or the Build Sheet. Beyond that, potential buyers will need to take the seller at his word on that claim. The Javelin underwent a restoration some time ago, and while it isn’t perfect, it still looks pretty good. The paint has a few minor flaws, but if the car is considered a survivor, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. The gold graphics are in good order, with no evidence of crazing, fading, or lifting. The panels are straight, and the car not only shows no significant dings or dents but no rust either. The owner doesn’t mention any issues underneath, so this looks like a pretty promising classic. The wheels and trim look excellent, and there are no visible problems with the glass.

Whether or not this is a Javelin ordered with the Go Pack, it does come with an excellent drivetrain combination. It features a 360ci V8, a 4-speed manual transmission, a 3.38 Twin Grip rear end, power steering, and power front disc brakes. Its performance figures weren’t shabby in a 1973 context, with the journey down the ¼ mile taking 15.3 seconds. However, two things aren’t clear with this car. The first is that the owner doesn’t indicate whether it is a numbers-matching vehicle. More importantly, he doesn’t tell us how well the car runs or drives. However, if its presentation is any guide, then the news should be positive on that second point.

The person who buys the Javelin will not be spending a fortune on its interior because it presents superbly. It is upholstered in black vinyl, and there are no issues to report there. The carpet looks excellent, as does the dash and pad. If I look carefully, I can spot that the lid on the console is slightly warped. This isn’t bad, and it’s something that I would live with to maintain the originality of the vehicle. It features the Rally gauge set that includes a factory tach, along with a tilt wheel and an AM/FM stereo. There’s no air conditioning, but this is still a pretty cool car without it.

If there is someone out there who is looking for a tidy classic that could be enjoyed immediately, this 1973 Javelin AMX is a car that is worth a closer look. While the Javelin wasn’t a massive seller in 1973, the company managed to convince 30,902 buyers that it was a good thing. Of those, a mere 5,707 were the AMX version. It isn’t clear how many survive today, but you can be sure that the numbers have dwindled significantly. Today, a good one will generally sell for around $22,000, but this figure will increase if it can be verified that it was ordered with a Go Pack. They can push up towards $30,000 if the vehicle in question is spotless. I don’t think that this one can achieve that higher number, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it made its way towards $23,000. This one would be worth watching carefully.

In case anyone doesn’t think the AMC 360 is worth building, well… how’s 480 horsepower sound?

Wasn’t 1973 the first year for the 5 mph bumper? Those bumpers certainly don’t appear to be able to withstand a 5 mph impact without damage. Maybe it’s actually a 1972?

It did not meet the guidelines thus AMC was fined for each car. Dick Teigue couldn’t make the Javelin look good with them and that was the choice to move forward without the Javelin nameplate for 1975.

Hard to believe this meets ’73 5mph front bumper standards even with the 2 black rubber bumper guards(removed here), say compared to a ’73 torino front bumper. The feds must have been snoozin.
Appears to be a cold air cowl induction hood. Can i assume this once had the black cowl induction air cleaner? – reproduced? expensive?
Surprised AMC didn’t sell as many of these as the firebird, since they were the only 2 ponycars with 400 or bigger cube motors avail in ’73.

AMC made two hoods for the AMX a functional cowl and non. The seller doesn’t show the bottom of the hood. If it is a functional hood the air cleaner is NOT reproduced and is about $1500 to replace. The cheap Autozone chrome aft market is way out place for sure.

The underhood is not as nice as the exterior. The cowl and skirts have been spray bombed rattle can black. Should be body color. The engine looks to have been done that way as well. To get it to blue chip status the driveline will need pulled and detailed along with the bay.

The 401 was still an option in both 73 and 74 for the Javelin. Very few were built. Still all are nice cars.

One of the best looking cars of the 70’s, don’t take it apart! it”s done! summers around the corner, drive it! this is a deal! mustangs, chevelles, nova, …… you name their all priced out of reach for most buyers, this car can only go up in price someday, just like all the others finally did, it’s better looking than most cars, does anyone know about orphan car shows?

I’ve owned a 74 javelin AMX but never recall the javelin side stripe on an AMX.
Most had the “T” stripe on the hood

I like it,and 1 plus of the year is not having to worry about lead additives for softer valves,or octane booster for too high of compression, this will be a real fun cruiser, and a stand out at shows,or really anywhere car guys congregate!

I think this might be same car that sold last summer in Ohio from an avid Pontiac collector. I almost bought it. Also I’m pretty sure no side stripes and engine badges were on sides of AMXs in 73. I also had a 74. This is nice car and they are hard to find with 4spd.

Since none of the other AMC guys mentioned it, there is no such thing as a numbers matching AMC
