Under 37K Miles! 1974 Corvette

Yes, it’s another C3, but this one has some truly nice points. As usual, I’m very skeptical of ultra-low mileage claims. However, this one has some merit, although I have no idea how they have certified miles (or what “certified” means in this case) when the odometer and ad list three separate mileage readings (all are under 40k, though). You can find the car for sale here on eBay in a no-reserve auction. It’s located in Grantville, Kansas and bidding is under $4,500 at this point.

This color goes by the imaginative name of “Corvette Bright Yellow” according to this color chart. I wish I knew enough to know if the overspray on the under bumper is original or not. That’s right, the front and rear urethane bumpers “failed years ago” and the seller is including a new urethane front and fiberglass rear covers.

The car has been stored since 1990, and the seller has owned it 10 years longer than that. I await your typical luggage rack comments eagerly! It almost looks difficult to raise the fuel cap cover between the tubes!

Here’s why I think the mileage may be real. This is a tremendously nice looking interior, despite the seller telling us that the seat covers are worn (but new ones are included). There are also plenty of pictures of the data plates and decals that show no overspray, masking or other signs of a repaint. One problem is that the heater core has been bypassed, so presumably you’ll need to replace it. There’s a long video here on how to do it. I can’t say it looks like fun.

This is the only shot we have of the engine. It’s an L48 base 350 cubic inch V8 with 195 horsepower, but of course should you want to deviate from stock, you can take to a considerably higher level. I guess it depends on what it ends up going for, but this seems like a really nice Corvette if it stays low enough, and the seller says it’s been started and driven at least annually, and is “operable” now. Do you agree that it could be a good one?

I think the reference was to the steel bumper supports showing due to the bumper covers being not on the car at the moment.

From the overspray on the front and rear bumper impact bars, I’d say the car has been repainted, or at least had some paint work done to it. The body and urethane bumper covers, were painted before being mated to the frame at St. Louis. Other than that, it looks like an original and unmolested Corvette, even the pollution equipment is still intact.

Loaded with automatic, factory air, steering, brakes, leather, AM/FM stereo radio and power windows, fixed up the car would make a pretty nice cruiser,.

I’m OK with the luggage rack since it’s already on the car. It’s not something I’d opt for but, it’s on there now so let it be I guess. If I had to repaint the car it would be removed.
Also, since the rear bumper cover needs to be replaced I go with the 1980 and up style. I just think it looks nicer with the little duck tail. The heater core replacement would be a P.I.T.A. but, I’ve done a few that were worse so, not a big deal.

“I’ve done a few that were worse”. The 68-82 air conditioned Corvette heater core, is just about the worse one I’ve ever had to change.

GM’s flat rate book gave their dealer’s mechanics, 7 1/2 to 8 hours to replace the heater core in air conditioned Corvettes. Even being familiar with how to change it, I can tell you that 8 hours is optimistic.

Concerning your comment about what are “Certified Miles”?

A “Certified Mile” is 3 times LONGER than a “Standard Odometer Mile”.

Therefore in regard to this Corvette the “Mileage” really does match the condition!

Oh wait a minute! We now have a new category. Yes, it’s an official barn find if the current seller bought the car 37 years ago and put it in storage. Well at least he knew where the “barn find” was.
