389 Tri-Power: 1962 Pontiac Bonneville

The horsepower race was on in earnest during the 1960s, with the decade’s early years setting the scene for what was to come. This 1962 Pontiac Bonneville perfectly demonstrates the emerging trend, with its engine bay housing a 389ci Tri-Power V8. That means that it looks good and has the performance to match. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Curvette for spotting the Pontiac listed here on eBay in Addison, Illinois. The seller set their price at $27,900 OBO for a classic that appears to need nothing.

This 1962 Bonneville is part of the Third Generation range that graced showroom floors from 1961 until 1964. Its presentation is impressive, with the seller stating that it represents an older restoration. That process included a repaint in its original Code L Garnet Mist (which the seller refers to as Bellmar Red), a shade that oozes class and style. A close inspection will likely reveal minor cosmetic imperfections, but the Pontiac is still comfortably presentable as a high-end driver. The trim is spotless, and the glass is crystal clear. Rounding out the exterior are Pontiac’s eight-lug wheels, undoubtedly the best-looking wheels to emerge during the 1960s. Overall, the car’s appearance will allow the new owner to hit the road with their head proudly held high.

Okay, this is where life gets serious with this Bonneville. Lifting the hood reveals a 389ci V8, equipped with a Tri-Power setup. It should generate 348hp, and the seller’s claim that only 2,092 buyers ticked that box on the Order Form in 1962 is consistent with the figures I have seen. The power feeds to the road via a heavy-duty three-speed manual transmission, while the performance leanings of this classic are reflected in the first owner’s decision to pass on assisted steering and brakes that might impact engine power. The seller confirms that this is a numbers-matching classic that is in excellent condition. There are no identified shortcomings, allowing the buyer to fly in and drive this baby home.

The Bonneville is consistent, with its interior as tidy as the exterior. There are no issues with the Red vinyl trim, with the dash and pad looking excellent. The brightwork sparkles impressively, and the carpet is clean. The wheel wrap is a wise protective addition, as are the under-dash gauges. A Pontiac tach sits to the left of the column, and it appears that the builder moved the shifter to the floor during the refurbishment. Factory options are limited to an AM radio.

This 1962 Pontiac Bonneville possesses the ‘wow” factor, with the V8 under the hood emphasizing its impact. The car’s overall condition suggests it has been treated respectfully since undergoing its restoration, leaving the buyer with little to do but slip behind the wheel and enjoy the classic motoring experience. Can you picture this Pontiac in your garage? Do you find the vision so enticing that you would consider pursuing the Bonneville further? I will understand if you do.

A beauty, am i seeing dual master conversion it’s a worthwhile investment although at that stage i would have splurged for power assist also. Power assist for the steering should be easy also with a modern steering box. I’d love it
