4-on-the-Floor: 1976 Chevrolet Camaro V8

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The second generation of the Chevrolet Camaro had an impressive 12-year run, from 1970 to 1981. And nearly 183,000 copies were built in 1976 alone, meaning that “iconic” might not be the best word to use in describing one. And the seller’s example may not be original in several areas, starting with the raised hood. But it presents well and runs great, two important factors. Located in Edgewater, Florida, this bold Chevy is available here on craigslist for $22,000. Kudos to Randy Johnson for another tip from our lost youth!

Chevy made few changes to the Camaro in 1976, and it almost outsold the market leader, the Ford Mustang II (missed by less than 4,000 cars). But they were almost not in the same space anymore, as the Mustang had morphed into a sporty subcompact with 4-cylinder power. And the 1976 Camaro was almost not a muscle car, either, as the Z28 had been withdrawn and there was no SS in sight.

A 350 cubic inch V8 was still offered in the Camaro, but it was detuned to just 165 hp SAE net. It found 56,700 buyers, but the 4-speed manual was harder to find at just 11,400 installations. We don’t know if either is numbers matching or if the 50,000 miles on the odometer are correct. A raised hood has been installed, but does it have anything to do with more horsepower?

The paint is described as custom, two-tone black and orange, though the latter seems mostly confined to the hood and trunk. It seems tidy with no signs of rust, and the black bucket seat interior appears to have held up nicely. This Camaro reminds me of a 1980s Saturday night cruiser, hopping from one drive-in to another – in search of an asphalt rumble!

$22K for a disco Camaro and in Florida without air conditioning and a black interior. Yeah someone has a severe case of Barrett-Jacksonitis.

I like it but as a Floridian, I agree that the absence of AC is an issue. As a high school kid in 81-82 this would have been great and I would’ve lived without AC.
    Not now.

There isn’t a lot of value for the money. Sure, it’s a 4spd, but is it a Saginaw? That’s what my 1978 350 4bbl 4spd Type LT Camaro came with. When it broke, I took it out, put in a Muncie and threw it away.

If a seller wants a premium price and handful of pictures that don’t show much detail and a generic description doesn’t do them any favors. If you want to get paid, do the work.

We hopped from drive-in to drive-in in the mid 60’s, did you forget them, 63 split windows, GTO’s, more muscle cars than were built in the 80’s

Pull the front & rear clips, get a 70-1/2 split bumper & matching rear, build up a nice clone & have at it. I agree with the A/C, but the car is pretty sharp & extremely hard to find up here north of the 49th parallel!

I bought a 1976 Camaro brand new. Black on black. Tinted the windows black, blacked out the windshield and headlight molding, put on real duals, trashed the catalytic, ET mags and 60 series Goodyears, Monroe load levelers, and drove it like I stole it. Car ran as well as anything else that was new at the time. Always thought the rear and front spoilers looked very cool on this car. Kept it several years before selling it to buy the new wife a new Plymouth Champ. That was a mistake in more ways than one.

That big hood must have something good under it.Looks like a parachute on the back.

No parachute, just someone scribbling on the photo to mask the license plate. “looking for an asphalt rumble” in this? A rumble with what exactly? Another 165 horse street sweeper? Now there is a street race that would get your heart racing.

The hood alone is an extra 100 hp, guaranteed.

“Custom paint.” What a laugh. Spent money on an orange hood, and then opted to ONLY paint the trunk lid and small filler panel attached at the rear window? Malarkey.

Wow, way way way too much. I’m thinking 7500. No ac, lots of other issues that have to be addressed.
