It’s refreshing to find an early Ford Mustang that has spent its entire life in California, still wears the factory-applied paint, and has pretty much been left alone since it was new. Another plus here is that the original buyer chose the GT equipment package, and while this one is still close to remaining a survivor, a fender-bender has crumpled the passenger-side quarter. Unless the next owner is OK with this, some sheet metal repairs will be needed, and probably the first new paint job. This 1966 Ford Mustang GT has made its way to the Costa Mesa area of The Golden State and can be found here on eBay, but the current bid of $6,031 isn’t enough yet to lift the reserve.
The seller says that the mishap occurred after the original owner became elderly, and that he probably continued driving past his safe point to keep operating a motor vehicle. However, despite the damage, the Mustang has no exterior rust and every panel is still original. Perhaps a skilled bodyman can get this section straightened out and deal with the other minor imperfections outside, but then it’ll be time to kiss the original paint goodbye, although this one should be a real beauty once the repairs are made, followed by a fresh respray.
It’s good to find that this one’s a factory A-Code car, indicating that it came equipped with a 289 V8 of the four-barrel variety. I was as confused by the block being red, but fortunately, the owner provided a satisfactory explanation for the color discrepancy. He says the engine received an overhaul just 500 miles ago, but upon completion, the builder sprayed the block red instead of blue. The 4-speed is said to shift smoothly, and it’s good to know that both the motor and transmission are still the original components.
Most of the interior is also stated to still be original, with the front seat upholstery and the dash the only items mentioned as having been replaced. Adding a new carpet would probably do wonders for the inside presentation, or perhaps sticking in a set of floor mats will be adequate for the time being. It would be great if the original owner had ceased driving a bit sooner, but things happen, and fortunately, this one seems to remain a very solid example overall. Any thoughts on this 1966 Ford Mustang GT?
Sprayed motor to match interior 💁♂️
Me thinks he likes red. See distributor cap, valve covers and air filter housing.
Really don’t like the red engine, but it is nice to see an untouched original. And someone resisting the urge to reupholster it with pony seat covers when it’s a standard interior car. Wonder where the reserve is because that will determine if this ends up being a good deal or not. Right now the bids have it at a great price, but reserve not met means it doesn’t matter what the current bid is, it won’t be sold at that price anyway
What kind of Ford distributor cap is that? It is screwed down like a GM unit.
it also looks like the heater core has been bypassed.
The distributor looks to be an aftermarket unit, maybe an Accel. And I agree that the heater core seems to be out of commission.
Distributor has been replaced. Looks like a Mallory distributor to me, they usually come with a red cap.
True, red is associated with Mallory and yellow with Accel, but Mallory traditionally uses two spring steel clips to hold the cap in place rather than twist and turn screws. Then again, things may have changed over the years.
Was the chrome piece on the rear 1/4 panel a delete on the GT’s ?
Yes it was.
And so was the standard rocker panel moulding that is on most 1966 models.
Good deal if purchased at a reasonable price. Engine paint has to go, PDR won’t work, and the body is a bit banged up. Carpet is rough.
I’m offended by that engine compartment lol!
