40K Original Miles: 1989 Jeep Wrangler Sahara

If you wanted to buy a Jeep Wrangler but felt like the basic model wasn’t fancy enough, Jeep heard you loud and clear with the YJ platform. This was the era in which Jeep introduced the Sahara edition trim, and the concept of a Wrangler being somewhat cushy inside. This has evolved to the current era, with many different trim levels available on the modern-day Wrangler that place an emphasis on creature comforts and luxury. The original Sahara wasn’t all that different than the entry level model but it did usher in a new way to look at the classic Jeep. Find this clean Sahara edition listed here on craigslist for $10,000.

Like many dress-up models, the changes to the Sahara were all cosmetic in nature. There were no significant hardware upgrades, and Jeep certainly didn’t touch the reliable 4.2L inline-six. The special colors on the outside, some subtle badges/emblems, and nicer materials in the cabin represented the bulk of the changes. However, it was the acknowledgement that Jeep buyers would be interested in some higher-end finishes made the Sahara and other models like the Rio Grande important to the brand. The Wrangler was becoming more of an everyday driver than just a weekend warrior.

And while the idea of a dress-up kit may be hard to swallow on a rough-and-ready rig like a Wrangler, I feel that by today’s standards, it offers an ideal balance of preserving the Wrangler’s authentic identity with some added style. Certainly, the new Wrangler lineup is nothing like the YJ in terms of options and more importantly, purpose, as the new Jeep really is just one more entry in an SUV class that’s bursting at the seams. The YJ was still a quintessential Jeep, which is to say largely devoid of luxury features and still largely focused on its original purpose. This Sahara edition’s interior, the main selling point, remains in excellent condition, and reveals it’s equipped with the optional automatic transmission.

The venerable inline-six was a 4.2 before it became a 4.0 and is tough as nails when it comes to longevity. The seller doesn’t tell us much about its mechanical upkeep but these really didn’t need a lot of servicing beyond the usual fluid changes. The ad mentions “new parts” but you’ll have to call to find out what’s been replaced. The Jeep is in New York so there is evidence of surface rust, but the body appears to be in sound condition. With just 40,000 miles on the clock, this is a low-mileage specimen, and the seller’s ask of $10,000 is reasonable if the rust isn’t too serious. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Mitchell G. for the tip.

Wrong rims, too bad because the standard ones look great. Like it though, the autoloader is fine by me on this one w the 4.2. The later more punchy 4.0 goes really nicely w the 5sp manual.

Googled 1989 ”Wrangler” and most of the unmolested ones had those wheels on them. Option maybe?

Thanks bobhess I’m probably wrong lol. A buddy had a brand new one. Came from the factory w steel wheels and center cap, but the rims were painted a nice khaki or olive color, basically matching the body. Most of the ones I saw up here anyways had that same look.

Looking at the variations displayed I got the idea that the steel wheel versions were for going into the woods and this one here for going to the office.

I’ve seen many and I mean many Jeeps that look this good on the top side with bottom crumbling…. always inspect, milage has nothing to do with it…

If you look at the left front fender, it has “surface rust” down into the inner fender. Also known as a rust hole. There is also a large rust bubble in front of the RR tire. I agree with Rw. This one would need a good underside look over before anyone laid down some $$$ on it.

I love the specialty Jeeps especially the Sahara. My sister had a beautiful blue 2002 Wrangler with 21k miles on it when she passed. She had no children so it went to my mom and instead of her selling it for what it was worth she sold it to her home care aid for 5k I was devastated but mom is going to do what mom wants to do and I had to except that.
