425 Horsepower 1962 Chevrolet Impala

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The 1962 Chevrolet was the top-of-the-line model in Chevrolet’s production lineup at the time. Since its introduction, the model has continued to symbolize luxury and affluence. The car’s long body lines and nostalgic styling are iconic, and the next owner will surely turn heads in it. This example is listed on craigslist in Shoreview, Minnesota for $16,500.

The Impala’s exterior appears to be in good condition. It wears a matte khaki paint with color-matching wheels. It’s hard to tell if the paint is original, but it looks great either way. The listing notes that the car has 88k miles which is low for a car this age.

The interior is finished with what is assumed to be an original red dash and door panels with what appears to be refinished red and black seats. The dash and gauge cluster are in excellent condition and a new tachometer was added to manage the engine swap. The Impala’s wood steering wheel is a very cool throwback to when the car was built.

The car’s original 283 engine was replaced with a 1964 Impala SS 409 engine that sends 425 horsepower to the rear wheels through a 350 automatic transmission. The seller notes that the Impala also has a Ford 9-inch 355 differential. They also installed a new exhaust system and front disc brakes. This 1962 Chevrolet Impala is the perfect marriage of horsepower and luxury. It has a large backseat which makes for exciting drives with the whole family. While it has been updated, it has all of the nostalgia of the ’60s still present. One can easily envision post-holiday meal drives when the cousins are in town and lots of grins. I’d go as far as to say this could be a fun daily for someone who wants to get into car culture but doesn’t have the budget for a multi-vehicle collection. If you are interested in calling this car yours, contact the seller on craigslist before it’s gone.

ding, ding, ding, it’s the daily double, sorry Adam, I’m sure Sara is a lot prettier, so she gets the post. Both threads are well written, just partial to the ladies.
Some people, I swear, while the 409 is a neat addition, its the most unlikely vehicle to have one, clearly the intent. I’m sure there were some 409s, but the bulk of sales of 4 doors, to the tune of 704,000, went to the small block. I’m confused on the intent here, ultimate sleeper, or daily driver? Make no mistake, I’m sure it has plenty of go, but why? Sorry, but I think the motor for future buyers will be a turn off. Maybe not, 409, 283, what’s the difference?

I’m kind of agreeing with Howard. I’m looking at the pictures here, and the driver’s side quarter panel looks a little funny to me. This is a 4 door sedan. If it is indeed an Impala, wouldn’t it have full hubcaps? The seats look out of place, like the tach, to me. This car could have been just fine with a 350 engine, and been a nice family cruiser. Leave the 409/425 for something more muscle car like, than the family sedan.
I guess what I’m thinking is (if I was a younger guy and still building project cars), I might consider finding a 62-64 Impala 2 door hardtop with a small block and perform a switch.
    Just me………..others may disagree.

This was featured on here just a few months back. I vividly remember the custom seat covers. Surprised it has not sold even though it is a four door. Would make a fun ’round-the-town cruiser. I’d have to call SMS and get the correct material for the seats though…

I sure wish that car had a 4, 5, or 6-speed in the floor. It would come to NC….

Back in 1969, when I was working for a Chevy dealership, we had something similar come in on trade. A 1965 Impala 4 door hardtop with a 396, 4 speed and factory a/c. Believe it or not, it sold to a retail customer the day after we got it in.

A fine example of “to each his own”.

I like it as it is except add some wide rear rims and tires, but nothing crazy. Still on steel rims. Love the sleeper look and the tach and red interior tells you this car has a split personality.

Bad A$$, good thing that they put in the Ford 9″ even with an automatic the Chevy diff won’t last long, ask me how I know. It could use an overdrive if you are planning any long trips with this thirsty mill…

I helped my high school sweetheart work on his ’62 2-door back in the early 70s. He had the engine bored from 283 to a 301 (or thereabout) and changed the 3 on the tree to a 4 on the floor. It was white with a white interior. We had a lot of fun in that car.
