428 Super Cobra Jet: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

After the sales bonanza that was 1965 and 1966, Ford Mustang sales began to decline beginning in 1967. That was natural in that serious competition had finally entered the field. To help turn the tide, Ford created the Mach 1 option in 1969, which increased the Mustang’s performance image and held sales erosion to just five percent. This ’69 Mach 1 has a 428 Super Cobra Jet engine, but it’s not numbers-matching though period correct. With a 4-speed manual, this car has been owned for 30 years in Lakeside, Arizona, and is available here on eBay where no one has stepped up yet to the bidding plate ($46,000 opening ante).

Nearly one-quarter of 1969 Mustang sales were tied to the Mach 1. Which came standard with a 351 cubic inch V8 and a host of visual cues available only with the “SportsRoof” body style (a fancy way of saying fastback). The ’69 received its second restyle in as many years and continued to climb up the weight scale (which would lead to an eventual downsizing in 1974). The seller has owned this Mach 1 for many moons and indicates it’s been an occupant of the State of Arizona for more than 40 years.

The seller is sad that this Mustang is up for sale, but the passage of time catches up with all of us. As a nod to the movie, Gone in 60 Seconds, this car has been nicknamed “Mr. Eleanor”. While the body is said to be solid as a rock, there is some minimal rust trying to peek in on the lower extremities. We’re told this is a real deal “R” code Mach 1 with an upgraded Super Cobra Jet 428 cubic inch V8 under the hood now. It’s been tweaked a bit and only 2,000 miles added in the past four years. The Ford comes with Ram Air which is not hooked up and a couple of those parts may be MIA.

While there’s a bit of an oil leak in the rear main seal, the seller says the 4-speed manual transmission has been rebuilt and a new clutch installed. The tires are showing their age, and the buyer will want to install some new rubber donuts. It’s said to be a good running car that will come with its built sheet. Also coming with the auto is a host of extra parts that the seller has appraised at $12,500 (that may help explain the starting bid amount). Is the Mustang Mach 1 your cup of tea?

I can say without much reservation, there wasn’t a more badaxx Ford than the ’69 CJ Mustang. It wrung out that little original Falcon off shoot to the extreme. As cool as it was, I really don’t remember seeing many, or any at all, and as a 15 year old punk gearhead, I would have noticed it. Perhaps it was the location, not many would order a car like this to slog through the winter, although I’m sure many did and why they are so rare today. Watching TV auctions, these middle aged folks, that possibly missed the era, sure go bananas over these. You can see it in their faces, they have a pocket full of cash, and come heck or high water, they are going home with that ’69 CJ Mustang with the chrome U-joints. USA, USA!!!

That price means that guy has lost his ever loving mind. That’s what my Pap would have said.

Never going to sell at what he is asking. Poor pictures, can’t see the seats with the covers on them, rust.

Not an SC car. Tag say it came with a 3.50 open axle.

The seller never claims it’s a factory SCJ car, only that it has one in it now. The header for the write up on this site made the claim.

There is a good chance someone worked out a deal and bought it off eBay. If the car is a factory CJ car and stood up to an in person inspection, it’s not surprising it sold. A serious buyer attending the auctions is Scottsdale would have taken the time to drive to see the car in person.

SCJs had an oil cooler. No sigh of that on this car.

From 30 feet, this car looks decent. However, a closer inspection tells me a different story. I see hopefully just surface rust in the trunk, the missing ram air set-up, body work, paint, interior, who knows what else, without an in-person visit. I love these cars, but I’d proceed with caution on this baby.

SCJ should come with a 3.91 or 4.30 Detroit Locker (W code).
still a good price for an AZ car….and its gone…

A code rear is a 3:50 non-locker which with a 4 speed is a one -wheel wonder. With all these parts it will make a good resto or modded CJ car,,,
