The Road Runner was Plymouth’s budget-minded entry in the muscle car arena of the 1960s. The first generation was built from 1968-70 and was a phenom with its cartoon character marketing and “meep meep” horn. This 1970 edition sports a 440 cubic inch V8 with triple 2-barrel carburetors, Chrysler’s biggest powerplant in the day except for the Hemi. Other than new paint and some light interior work, this looks like it could good be a solid runner. Located in Levittown, New Jersey, this “Bird” is available here on eBay where the reserve has yet to be met at $37,450.
The VIN provided by the seller indicates this Road Runner had a 383 V8 under the hood when it was new, so the 6-Pack is a more recent edition. Too bad, because if it had been built this way, it would be one of just 429 produced with a 4-speed manual transmission. As it was, the car was a bit less rare at 5,839 copies with the same tranny. The photos provided by the seller aren’t many, but it looks as though the Plymouth is wearing Sassy Grass Green paint when grey or red primer isn’t present instead. Rust doesn’t seem to be an issue, so whipping the exterior into shape shouldn’t be a big undertaking.
This engine compartment is nice and shiny, suggesting that the powerplant work has occurred since the seller bought the car, which was 14 years ago. The odometer reads 97,000 miles which averages just under 2,000 miles annually since the machine rolled off the assembly line. We’re told the car runs great and it’s not likely that any mechanical work is needed.
Open the doors and the interior looks tidy and is mostly in decent shape except for a couple of tears in the driver’s side bench seat. The carpeting may be a bit faded, but replacement sets are not expensive to acquire. If you don’t like the looks of the “dog dish” hubcaps, the seller says a set of Chrysler Rallye wheels will come along for the ride. As for as project muscle cars go, this one doesn’t look like it will be a money pit to finish off.
These were so much better with a standard 318. Had one new, never let me down.
they never made a 70 RR with a 318…..
that was a satellite, maybe a belvedere probably a satellite tho
If you plan on driving this, buy yourself a Sunoco station. Had one in high school. Passed everything, but the local Sunoco and that was when premium was maybe 45 cents. Mine was FE5.
This isn’t Sassy Grass Green, it looks more like Ivy Green or possibly Lime Green
I’m seeing Light Green Metallic.
not a true 6 pac car either
Pretty expensive for a car that needs more than just paint.
1970’s were by them selfs ? and kinda rare as they aged out. They also came with the Charger gauge pack so admire vrs the 68/67. Built a model in 1970 in the dark green shade that was popular at that time.
Plymouth = 6 barrel
Dodge = 6 pack
Pontiac = TRI POWER
40k for a unrestored nom 383 RoadRunner? Little high imho. A real Sublime/black bucket interior 440/6 pack air grabber 4speed was almost my first car. My grampa and I looked for a car when I was a kid and stayed with them every summer. My dad and grampa were hotrod nuts too so he put up with me, ha ha. We saw it up a holler we took for a short cut into Charleston WVa , nice car, no rust, 50,000 +-miles and $1500.00. After the test drive with the owner sideways in four gears my grampa said ” There is no way in hell your getting that car son” The owner, laughing, said ” Kid, you would kill yourself in this thing” I would have been the baddest 12 year old in town with that car. Ended up with a beautiful 49 Chevy Deluxe cab pick up for $450.00 with new mags and tires. Those were the best times of my life, riding with grampa.
