The seller of this 1968 Chevrolet Camaro doesn’t go into great detail about the car in their eBay ad, but they give us some important details. They claim it’s a low mileage SS, but it’s been upgraded into what appears to be a serious machine. The engine is said to be a 454 V8 that’s paired to a Muncie 4-speed and 3.55 Posi rear end. The wide wheels in the back give it a menacing look and should help get all that power to the ground. It’s located in West Burlington, Iowa and can be found here on eBay with a current bid of $10,100.
The seller states that they’ve owned the car for the past 20 years, but that’s all the history they offer up. Given the modifications, it’s seems likely that the car was restored at some point in it’s past. The paint and body look to be in good shape, but there appears to be paint splatters down both sides of the cars. It looks to be intentional though. Hopefully, it’s temporary and can be removed without damaging the paint.
This looks to be a big block engine, but it will take a closer inspection to verify that it is a 454. Even the lowest performance 454 variant is still a powerhouse of an engine to have in a Camaro. If the engine has any performance modifications, it’s probably safe to assume this car is a handful to drive on the street.
The interior looks to be fairly stock and original. The biggest modification I spot is the center stack of the dash. It appears someone deleted the radio and climate control, replacing it with a bare piece of aluminum. This would definitely save some weight, but the lack of a heater is going to limit usability a bit. It’s next owner could always replace the heater if they plan on driving it when it’s cold out. A stereo might be nice, but personally, I’d rather listen to the rumble of that V8.
It’s reasonable to assume this Camaro was built to drag race, but without more information from the seller, it’s hard to say exactly what kind of life this Camaro has lived. The body looks straight and the truck is solid. Decoding the trim tag reveals that it was originally painted Matador red, so it’s definitely undergone a color change. While it won’t ever be an all original car, for the right price, this could be a really fun Camaro to have. I’d want to have it inspected to make sure the floors are solid and that there aren’t any signs of bondo in the common problem areas. The 454/4-speed combination have to make this car a bit of a handful, but it could be fun!
In a past life this looks to have been raced, as it sits it would fail a thorough tech inspection. The engine looks more like a placeholder, installed to make the car more sellable. There are a lot of cars like this that were raced long ago, eventually put in the corner of a shop or the back of a garage, then left to sit for decades. They avoided the effects of weather. They can make great projects if a deal can be struck with a new owner. This car ran through eBay last week with a high bid of $23,000 reserve no met.
