454 Camper Special: 1975 Chevrolet C20 Silverado

This 1975 Chevrolet C20 Silverado is a real-deal Camper Special with the desirable 454 mill under the hood and loads of original patina. The Chevy sports two-tone paint with a faded green over white combo that the seller feels would look best if it were simply clear-coated over and left alone. The market for trucks like these will seemingly never go away, at least as long as there’s someone out there who remembers driving one when they were a teenager or on the job site – whatever the scenario is, these rigs just drip with nostalgia. This one looks solid and is said to run well, and is listed here on eBay with bidding to $8,800 and the reserve unmet.

Reserve unmet might seem a little strange for a truck that’s been bid to a fair number and isn’t pristine, but the seller likely knows he won’t have to work too hard to see $10,000 out of this if it doesn’t sell on eBay. The details look right here, from the original paint to the chrome bumpers to the dog dish wheels and hubcaps – and it has the look that many enthusiasts are trying to replicate if their truck doesn’t currently look like this one does. I personally love the color scheme and wish lime greens would come back into style, as it’s a nice way to stand out without being too much of an attention-seeker.

The interior features the familiar blanket thrown over the bench, which usually means the seating material is in tatters underneath. Given this truck has lost some of its finish to the sun, I’m guessing the interior fought a losing battle with the elements as well. The cabin isn’t pristine – you can see the map pocket sagging off the door panel on the passenger side – but it isn’t terrible, either, and you could certainly live with it for the time being. The seller doesn’t mention much about the interior, and really, unless it left the factory with A/C, there aren’t too many questions to ask. The floor liner looks a little tired, and it seems like the wood veneer around the gauges is pretty much shot.

But those are strictly cosmetic issues, and the bigger news is the 454 under the hood. The seller doesn’t have any paperwork to support this, but claims the previous owner told him the engine and transmission were rebuilt. Who knows, but the good news is the drivetrain features a venerable combination that is unlikely to leave you stranded. Throw in the fact that the Camper Specials are overbuilt from the factory, and you have a platform that’s pretty hard to go wrong with. The numbers will bear out what the market thinks these trucks are still worth by the end of the weekend, but I wouldn’t be too worried about this Chevy C20 finding a new home before the new year.

Baloney, hogwash, gibberish, guff, malarky, hooey, nonsense( you know, there’s a bunch of synonyms for BS),,don’t play into this hype, people and I suppose it’s my self imposed mission to warn buyers, these, in this condition, especially with the big block, are $5 grand TOPS! The only way to take the “ambition” out of these sellers, is not to buy it. 64 bids and not sold ( see 1st sentence) These people sure think they have Gods gift in their yard. They really aren’t that nice. Don’t get me wrong, I have a big smile on my face everytime I drive my squarebody GMC, but facts is facts, it’s a 1977 vehicle I paid $1400 bucks for( and wouldn’t have paid much more), and is crude by most of todays standards. Better deals can be had and NOT from Texas( or California), that’s your 1st mistake and certainly not $10g’s. If, for some reason you simply must have a squarebody, just that name “squarebody” conjures up images of the latest “flash in the pan”, if you can wait, the steam will fizzle on these too.

Great points, but we just saw a 1977 Cutlass Supreme bid to over 27 grand and not sell! That was an 11-12k car 2 years ago. So I see this easily going into the 5 figures.

Yes, things will cool. People will deplete all their savings and then will be complaining of how they have no money, some will need help. Prices will then come down as the buyers disappear and people realize they don’t need 30 grand tied up in a smog era GM product that gets 10-12 MPG.

I agree just sold 1988 square body Chevy Suburban, 4×4 loaded no rust, rebuilt motor for 6500 in Az, don’t know what their smoking.

Had one of these. the 454 camper specials will pull anything well.
But if you are not pulling anything, they get 10 mpg, tops, consistently,
    all the time.

Actually, I have the 350, 4 speed, and I don’t get a heck of a lot more than that, plus, I think if I had to pull something, I’d much rather have the 454..

I’ve been wondering- are these buyers who pay
these crazy prices (many times for a vehicle they don’t-
see in person) ever embarrassed to tell anyone that?

Yeah $8800.00 seems rather high for a truck that need a paint job and rust repair, with a 454 gas guzzler in it. I struggled to sell my 91 Silverado low miles one owner loaded, almost show condition for $9300.00 which was less than I was hoping for. Guess it all depends where you are located and who has the urge for a truck at a certain time.

It’s a weird time in history. If you had the foresight to hold your old car sell now if you’re at all inclined to sell. This won’t last.

Bid to $10,200 but auction ended with reserve not met. A little pricey for one that needs rust repair and a complete repaint, along with carpet and other little details. Great trucks, though. Love my 1978 GMC C-35 non-dually Sierra Classic. Equipped the same way as this, but with tilt wheel and intermittent wiper options, along with one tons having larger brakes and Hydro-Boost, and a higher GVW rating. The 454 is just an awesome engine, still runs like new. I prefer mine to any new truck out there. Far fewer problems with it and WAY less expensive to operate and maintain than the new ones.
