454 Power! 1946 Willys Custom

Looking to spice up your motor pool with something on the wild and crazy side? This 1946 Willys in Duluth, Minnesota may be just this ticket to ratchet up the interest level when you pull in at the local car show or custard stand. An eleven-word listing here on Craigslist includes the phrase “must see,” which is apparently the only way you’ll learn anything about it. Cleverly priced at one dollar less than $18,000, this nicely dressed-out hot rod features a stretched wheelbase, ’70s-style rolling gear, nondescript 454 V8, and three-speed automatic transmission. Running condition is not disclosed, but we gather it’s covered only 10,000 miles since being given a second life as you see it. Thanks to reader Pat L. for spotting this crazy custom.

A diamond plate and tube steel theme extends to the asymmetrical steering wheel. That and the low-mounted retro gauges emphasize form over function. The flat dashboard compliments the equally spartan listing. Plush-looking seats promise more comfort that the originals, and a towering shift lever urges celebration of the vehicle’s automatic transmission. Operating a manual transmission with an eight-foot long shifter would quickly test your commitment to fashion.

Much less of this Chevy V8 resides behind the firewall than on, say, a fourth-generation GM F-body, and putting the massive rat motor as rearward as possible can only help with balance and cornering dynamics. The tunnel-ram and dual-quad carburetors probably add more flash than forward thrust in this application, accentuating the cartoon personality of this fully fleshed-out custom.

More tubes and diamond plate rearward add texture and continuity to the build. Custom tail lights with blue dot inserts deviate extensively from the trailer-style lights that graced stock Jeeps to this day. The choice of what looks like a functional tail gate instead of a seamless welded void at the rear seems interesting, as does the comical litany of nonsensical key words at the end of the listing including “corvette” and “Yamaha,” phrases that share similarities with this vehicle as much as “toaster” and “Tuvan throat singing.” The marketing genius seems like a stretch. “Look honey, I was shopping for a Corvette, but I think I’ll buy this metallic pea green Willys instead!” Regardless of how it’s presented, the build has a completely finished look to it, assuming it’s safe to drive, and might offer a turn-key experience for someone who likes to attract attention wherever they go. Enjoy it for a year or two, then let someone else have the fun. What will your neighbors say when you pull up in this big block-powered hot rod Willys?

Ditch all of the diamond plate, especially that funky ass steering wheel, and then it would be cool.

It’s a automatic not stick. It’s looks like a stick shift it’s just a fancy auto stick. And I agree the steering wheel gotta go!!! In New York you would get pulled over in a hot second. The Police officer would say.. ok where is your muffler’s? Ahhhh none. And on the flatbed it would go.. bye bye. 😂

The Go Devil was a much better and more appropriate engine.

This is set up as a “sand drag ” Jeep. I’d have to think an officer would have to call for backup writing out the equipment violations on this. Steering wheel aside, someone did a really nice job here. It seems to have a license plate, not sure how they got that, I think Minnesota has similar vehicle equipment laws, unless maybe they knew the DOT person. Same old thing, $20g’s a lot for limited use vehicle, I think, but it’s pretty cool.

And again, with no front fenders, wouldn’t be legal in many states. And obviously with no mufflers just about every state is excluded. Just an odd dragster.
