4th Gen Rarity: 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe

The word “legendary” tends to get thrown around too much, but the Chevrolet Monte Carlo truly deserves the moniker after its highly successful runs on the NASCAR circuit, let alone its popularity as a personal luxury/muscle car for the general public. Add a rare trim level like the one on this well-preserved 1987 SS Aerocoupe in Staten Island, New York, and no adjective is off-limits. Check out the original listing for this stunner here on eBay, where the current bid (as of this writing) of $15,000 is nowhere near the Buy It Now price of $32,000.

The Chevy Monte Carlo debuted in 1970 as a unique combination of luxury and power that would keep the nameplate extremely popular for nearly two decades. This Monte Aerocoupe represents the peak of the 4th generation, still combining luxury and power (albeit the 80s version of both) while adding the aerodynamic and aesthetic quirk of that wraparound rear window. The seller reports some “slight checking” of the paint on the hood and spoiler (pics are provided) and states the original rims and tires will be included with the sale; otherwise, this car presents about as well as it possibly could.

For 1987, Chevrolet produced around 73,000 Monte Carlos, and only a tick over 6,000 of them were SS Aerocoupes, all of which came with the 5.0 L 305 cu. In. High Output V8 mated to a  4-speed TH200-4R automatic transmission with overdrive. The SS Aerocoupes also got a 4 bbl carburetor and stiffer sport suspension while kicking out a respectable 180 horsepower. This engine is so clean you could practically eat off of it, and it recently received a new water pump, new hoses and belts, and a new cat-back exhaust system.

On second thought, don’t eat anything anywhere near this car, because it just looks way too nice inside and out to take the chance. The burgundy interior is flawless. That’s really all that needs to be said. Even the ashtrays (remember them?) are spotless and shiny. The seller doesn’t mention any of the electronics being inoperable, so considering the meticulousness with which the rest of the car was preserved, everything on the inside is almost certainly in working order. There is a ton of original and maintenance documentation included with this Monte, too. How do you think this 1987 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe would look in your garage?
