55k Original Miles: No Reserve 1993 Cadillac Allante

Automotive history demonstrates that the Allante made no real sense. Cadillac, long the purveyors of cars with enough interior space to host a game of tennis, decided that it would add a relatively small two-seat Roadster to its product range. The design process alienated many within the company, the production process was exceptionally complex, and the sticker price was eye-watering. Therefore, it is unsurprising that sales volumes never met the company’s expectations. Our feature 1993 Allante is an extremely tidy survivor that recently received thousands of dollars worth of work to ensure its mechanical health. It is ready to provide motoring enjoyment to a new owner, with the seller listing it here on eBay in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Bidding sits at $5,100, and with No Reserve to complicate matters, it is only days away from heading to greener pastures.

Cadillac handed the design of the Allante to Pininfarina, causing great hostility within its own Design Studio. It felt that it was up to the challenge of creating something special, but Cadillac believed that it would help boost sales to have the badge of a prestigious Italian designer gracing its new model’s flanks. That wasn’t an unusual decision, but the construction process certainly was. Pininfarina moved beyond the design process to assemble each Allante body, which was then flown via a specially modified Boeing 747 for final assembly at Cadillac’s Hamtramck Assembly Plant. Unsurprisingly, this approach resulted in a high sticker price, hampering sales volumes. Our feature car left Hamtramck during the final year finished in Polo Green Metallic. This was 1-of-11 shades available that year and is interesting because it almost becomes Black under certain lighting conditions. The paint is in good condition, and the body appears to have a single dent visible on the driver’s side front fender near the headlamp. Otherwise, it is as straight as an arrow and seemingly rust-free. The missing plastic on the exterior mirror should be replaced by the time the winning bidder takes delivery. There is no information supplied regarding the power top, but the glass and trim look pretty respectable.

Many people believe that the 1993 Allante was the pick of the bunch, courtesy of the engine upgrade performed by Cadillac. Previously blessed with two versions of the “High Technology” V8, 1993 brought the L37 Northstar powerplant to the party. With the cylinder heads and engine block made from aluminum and overhead camshafts, the 4.6-liter motor sends 295hp and 290 ft/lbs of torque to the front wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The combination made the Allante a surprisingly energetic performer that also returned respectable fuel consumption figures. The seller states that this car has a genuine 55,000 miles on the clock without mentioning verifying evidence. They recently invested over $4,000 into the electrical system and replaced the radiator and other hoses. They state that everything works as it should, the car is in excellent health and is a turnkey proposition for the new owner.

The seller only supplies three interior images, and this is the best of the bunch. Its poor quality doesn’t tell us much beyond the fact that the Beige leather seems to have no significant issues. The dash looks okay, and there is no obvious broken plastic. Buyers expected plenty of safety and luxury for their money, and Cadillac delivered. There is a driver’s airbag, climate-control air conditioning, power operation for the locks, windows, seats, and mirrors, cruise control, Twilight Sentinel lighting, and a premium Delco/Bose stereo incorporating an AM/FM radio/cassette/CD player. The seller confirms that everything works as it should, with no functional issues or other problems.

Cadillac held high hopes for the Allante, believing that the cachet of its Italian coachbuilt body would lure customers into showrooms. However, only 21,430 buyers handed over the cash for one between the 1987 launch and the discontinuation at the end of 1993. Interestingly, the 1993 tally of 4,670 was the badge’s most successful year. This is one of those cars, and its condition is pretty respectable for a survivor-grade vehicle. The auction action has been quite subdued, and this classic might struggle to reach $10,000. If that proves the case, would you be tempted to throw your hat into the ring by submitting a bid?

Complex electronics plus an early Northstar engine (head studs anyone?) is probably scaring bidders away. If I was to buy it, I would drive it sparingly. It is a nice looking car with that paint color.

The eBay listing is gone. It has the analog dash which is a plus. I have had at least 6 different Northstar powered vehicles. Besides changing the coil packs in the Allante, none gave me any trouble. Just stick to scheduled maintenance.
The Allante has a roomy trunk which means longer trips are not a problem. Sufficient power with the Northstar. My understanding is the earlier models had better seats (Recaros?), but still a solid riding/handling car that was comfortable. The cup holders weren’t great.

These look pretty sharp in dark green. The wheels and tires fill out the fenders nicely. Good proportions, tidy & tight body design.

I’ve never seen one of these in anything but silver, white, or red before. Didn’t even know they came in green. Very nice color for it.

Not sure what is going on with the Ebay listing. Not only does the link provided not work, but you can search for it and find it, but when you try to open the individual listing it’s broken again. I suspect the seller yanked it because they realized it was going to sell for too little. It’s hard to pull big dollars for a “rare” car when there are 22 others listed at the same time on the same selling platform.

Polo Green was the second most popular color for the 1993 model year (after the red used on the Indy Pace Car versions). I’ve owned two of these. Great cars to drive but eventually the electronics started to act up and that’s a royal pain to troubleshoot.

Wow, never seen one in this color, pretty rare. I did have a ’94 Corvette in Polo green but that was a common color on those Vettes.

I understand GM’s attraction to Pininfarina penning the design but couldn’t Hamtramck stamp the panels in house? It’s not like the good paisans were hand forming the bodies on wooden bucks.

Besides the Catera the Allante is one of the most disappointing products to come from Cadillac. Why would such a lovely roadster struggle to reach 10k? What a shame for such a product with the wrong drive train layout and poor engineering. If looks alone was the selling point this car would be a WINNER.
