58k Mile Time Capsule: 1993 Chevrolet Caprice

Chevrolet gave its full-size cars a major facelift in 1991, shifting from a rectangular look that dated from 1977 to a more rounded, aerodynamic appearance. These changes would run through 1996 when the rear-wheel drive land yachts were retired. This 1993 edition is a one-owner car that looks to have just emerged from a time capsule with little-to-no flaws at 58,000 miles. Located with a dealer in Crown Point, Indiana, this survivor is available here on eBay where the no-reserve auction stands at $8.500.

The Caprice began life in 1965 as a gussied-up Impala and remained a continuous Chevrolet staple for more than 30 years. When the cars were restyled in 1991, they looked vastly different but were mostly carryovers underneath the bodywork. Anti-lock brakes would become standard equipment, and two V8 engines would be offered, the 5.0-liter and 5.7-liter, with the latter mostly for police use. If you bought one to be used as a taxi, it came with a 4.3-liter V6. Motor Trend liked what they saw in 1991 and named the vehicle Domestic Car of the Year. As the decade wore on, sales declined as demand for these types of automobiles was shifting.

This 1993 Caprice Classic (with LS trim) was one of 90,000 produced that year. That would be the last time the Caprice in total saw output exceed 100,000 copies (a station wagon was offered in addition to the big sedan). This super-nice original car has been treated well by its single-family ownership for the past 30 years. It will transfer ownership with plenty of documentation, including no less than 42 service records.

Besides a squeaky-clean body, paint, interior, and undercarriage, the family/seller spent $1,000 recently on a variety of services so the car would be turn-key for its next owner. That work includes changing all the fluids, a new transmission gasket, new tires, an A/C recharge, and a thorough cosmetic detailing. If you like these Chevies with the “upside down bathtub” styling, it might be hard to find one any nicer than this blue beauty.

They just don’t come any nicer than that at 30 years old! Impressive dealer workup.

I am old enough to remember when the Seattle police started adding the Chevrolet like this to police fleet and they kept getting rear ended by other Seattle police cars when they were on the way to a call because these things had the antilock brakes and the older dodge diplomats in the fleet didn’t

Although I’ve never lived in Seattle, I grew up across the water in Kirkland. And I’ve seen Chevy Caprice pursuit vehicles. I’d buy a Caprice police package if I knew where to look. I wouldn’t use it as a police car. I’d use it as a taxi cab.

Beautiful looking car. I remember when this generation Caprice first intro’d. I thought it was the best looking car of its generation. Better looking I think than Olds’ version.

My daily driver is identical to this one – same year and color.
Great driving machine on the highway with good mileage although it’s a bit ponderous to drive around town and the 305 is a bit gutless off the line. Mine has the fancy alloy wheels -including the full size spare – which seem a bit like GM’s attempt to make a BBS look-alike
I’m the second owner of this LS model and the original owner swears that those wheels came standard from the factory when it was new and were not dealer fitted. Does anybody know if this is a fact because I note that the advertised car has only the wire wheel covers on it?
    Nice car though.

Yes, I remember. We had an Impala (the big 1975 version) and my Dad was looking years later at this Caprice because he liked GM sedans. Essentially this was a Cadillac underneath in many respects. But the experience with gas mileage lacking, he ended up buying a really interesting Mitsubishi DOHC wagon. Great car, too great. People going into Dodge Chrysler showrooms buying the Japanese cars with Dodge badges, left them with domestic inventory soon sold at cost. But I remember he was ogling the Caprice package with the alloy wheels. I believe Cadillac and Buick were upset they were losing customers within their own GM umbrella, just like what was happening at Dodge. Except all domestic blunders. It’s really a shame. Remember what happened right after this, so Cadillac, Corvette and Buick wouldn’t have internal tantrums? Chevy Citation. It’s as if the Russians were embedded to destroy GM. Same with Chevy Volt project, which technology was merged with Toyota, became the Prius. Big 3 USA auto makers putting many holes in own foot. This Caprice is really a truck underneath. A bit heavier than it needed to be, but imagine if they did the station wagon Caprice as a cargo utility, one side sliding door and tailgate? It wouldn’t have completed against any other business unit and would have been an excellent utility platform. The marketing departments stuck on commercials towing kids around got too much voice within, still.

Hello, yes it’s true. My neighbor had a burgundy Caprice with the upgraded lattice style wheels that were beautiful. Love these cars.

Sorry, but you can keep it. I’ll take a Roadmaster or a Brougham instead.

After they got rid of those built-in rear fender skirts, it’s look were greatly improved. Didn’t look so much like a Hudson.

It may sound cruel, but gut the back seat and do a suspension upgrade especially on the rear, add the hitch. That cargo area behind you is great place for mini fridge and clean clothes easy access. Trunk becomes the “catch-all” and tools, mechanical spares etc. Pulling around the Bambi Airstream. This is a comfortable cruiser, so no, you’re not going to swap out an LT and still never be fast enough. You’re not taking back seat riders on the travels, just your partner maybe a dog, which you added space for. This is a decently aerodynamic puller. Should do pretty well under such use. There’s an actual fish species we referred to this car as in Florida when it came out. The “Slippery _ick” is in the wrasse family of fishes. Similar ‘body style’

    Does this car have a 305 V-8 or a 350 LS1 i was not mentioned?

    My 96 Caprice has a 4.3 V8 not a V6. I think the writer got it wrong!

I’m wondering how that could be. The only engines shown are the 305 or the 350. The 4.3 is a V6 not a V8.
