This 1970 Chevy Nova likely began life as a “Grandma” car. It has the right power equipment for that assumption (250 cubic inch inline-6, 2-speed automatic transmission, drum brakes). After 140,000 miles, it still runs, though the seller says it’s not roadworthy. A complete restoration is needed, and most of our readers are probably predicting this is an SS tribute waiting in the wings. Located in Hot Sulfur Springs, Colorado, this diamond-in-the-rough is available here on craigslist for $5,000. Tony Primo brought this project to light for us.
Compact cars were still popular in 1970, even though gasoline was still 30 cents a gallon (just wait three years). The Nova (no longer the Chevy II) was probably the niche’s sales leader at more than 307,000 assemblies that year. Upwards of 40% were 6-banger 2-door coupes like the seller’s car, which has a few extras (chrome trim, power steering). Its owners have gotten their money’s worth over the years as the odometer is well through its second go-round.
The white paint was redone, but rust has crept in over time. While the driver’s side rear quarter panel has some corrosion, it looks as though the passenger side will need to be replaced. The floorboards are suspect, though some repair work has been started. The seats and carpeting are out of the car, and the seller says the former are new, but they are nowhere in sight.
Since most buyers aren’t likely going to want to rebuild a basic motor, the seller has a 327 small block V8 (status unknown) to throw in for an SS-type project. A 200R4 transmission with overdrive is there for the taking. The seller has mounted new tires on aftermarket wheels (Keystones?). So maybe you could think of this as a muscle car kit!

For someone whom has the time and money this could be an interesting one as it’s not a basket case. Personaly i would.restore it to original. The only thing i would improve upon is go to power brakes and swap in front discs for safety’s sake
Wish it was closer…
I NOVA cared for these! Blame it on the BOSA NOVA! 😉 with apologies to Edie Gorme. Great song, not so great car.
Great project for someone on a tight budget.
gone.
I love the sound of a straight 6 … when it hits the bottom of a dumpster. There’s a LS1/T56 on marketplace near me that would find a new home fast, and the previously mentioned disc brakes.
6 cylinder with a 350 fender emblem. !! NEED TO BE CAREFUL ON THIS ONE!!
