67K Mile: 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

For many of us, there is nothing more beautiful than the clean lines of a 2nd generation Camaro or Firebird. TJ found this one in Fresno, California and sent it to us. This 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 has reportedly only 66,721 miles on it since new. The car is listed here on eBay with 4 days remaining in the auction. Currently, the Z28 is bid to $14,700 and the reserve has not been met. There are a number of factory 1980 components on the car.

The black interior of the car looks original except for the aftermarket shifter protruding from the center console. The car has the base vinyl interior with manual windows and the full Z28 gauge package. The passenger visor is missing and it appears the car was not equipped with air conditioning from the factory. From the rear, it is evident that the owner chose to leave two pieces of rear louvers on without the middle section.  Aftermarket louvers were popular in the 1980s louver pieces and are hard to find today.  A complete set in great condition can go for $800.  The louvers were made in either plastic or aluminum with different spacing.

All 1979 Z28’s left the factory with a Chevrolet LM1 350 cubic inch V8 engine that was rated at only 175 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. This was more horsepower than the new Mustang in 1979 but not close to the power of a W72 equipped Pontiac Trans Am which was rated at 220 horsepower. A buyer could order their Z28 with a Borg Warner T-10 4 speed transmission or a Turbo 350 automatic transmission. Chevrolet offered one of the more aggressive rear gear ratios in 1979. A buyer could get a 3.73 rear gear ratio which helped it off the line but limited top speed.

You will notice that someone has changed out the hood scoop for the 1980 air induction scoop. The Z28 still has its factory 1979 air cleaner and there are no lines hooked up for the WOT switch so the hood scoop is not functional. Also, the wheels have been replaced with the aluminum wheels that were optional in 1980. Someone also added dual exhaust tips from a Pontiac Trans Am to the exhaust. This appears to be a clean car but it is not a survivor. It should sell in the high teens by the end of the week.

Personally, I ‘ve never cared for that type of aftermarket shifter; this car looks good otherwise. It’s a shame that they didn’t make the hood scoop functional after the swap. GLWTA!! :-)

I like them. they work well when used as designed for. has reverse lock out too. I think it’s a B&M Star Shifter.

The car has the somewhat rare intermittent wipers.

As common as late 2nd gen f-bodies were back then, seems now like they’ve just about ceased to exist in the universe.

This gen Chevy Camaro seemed to have a very nice selection of paint colors 🎨

Aftermarket shifter ruins what is otherwise a pretty nice car.

I would remove all of the Day 2 add-ons and enjoy this in beautiful stock condition.

No A/C, roll up windows, that ugly shifter, the wrong hood, wheels, I doubt 67,000 miles, it probably took a shot in the snoot a long time ago, pass
