It’s almost impossible today to order a truly unique vehicle, but that was not the case back in 1970, when you could walk through the doors of your local Pontiac dealer and check off a good portion of the option sheet when it was time to get a new LeMans Sport. With $1,634.65 worth of options and a list price of $4,759.60, one must wonder why the original owner didn’t simply get a GTO. Maybe they didn’t like the Endura bumper or the extroverted image, but whatever the reason, they drove off in a handsome Verdoro Green LeMans that is being offered on eBay as a 73,000-mile original. It’s not perfect, but the seller from Costa Mesa, California, is presenting it with plenty of pictures and documentation.
The original owner chose the hottest engine available in a LeMans Sport, the L78 400 “HO.” There are some discrepancies in power ratings; the brochure says that the four-barrel 400 in the Sport produced 330 horsepower and 445 lb.-ft. of torque, but at least one advertisement (and the eBay seller) claims that 345 horsepower was available (Hemmings says that the 345-horse 400 was available with a manual transmission). According to the brochure, the 330-horsepower engine was only available with a Turbo 400 and 3.08:1 rear axle ratio, but this car also has the $42.13 “Safe-T-Track” differential, so all-in-all, this is a potent combination. The engine itself is not the original unit; the block was replaced with a 400 from a ’74 Trans Am, but the original high-compression heads and carburetor were installed on the new short block. You’ve certainly noticed the air conditioning compressor; it blows “cool” but not cold, so it will need work. The master cylinder, fan clutch, and valve cover gaskets were recently replaced.
The interior of the Sport is virtually immaculate aside from a “tiny split” on the dashboard. The seats and carpet are original and the carpet shows “just a little bit of fading.” The woodgrain dash and deluxe steering wheel were standard equipment and look great, and this car has optional power windows and power seat. Everything works except for the not-as-cool-as-it-should-be air conditioning.
The seller says that the body is rust-free and accident-free, although the paint is a combination of faded original and poor respray.
The black vinyl top, however, has been recently installed (which must assuage some concerns about what lies beneath), and the Rally II wheels add just the right amount of sportiness to this under-the-radar muscle car. The top bid right now is only $5,900, which has not yet met reserve (although the seller says that the reserve is reasonable). This looks like a perfect driver or paint-job candidate as it sits, and it might even raise a few eyebrows at the local car meet. After all, a lot of these have been turned into GTOs, and it’s always refreshing to see one that hasn’t.

These LeMans look great in dark green. Nice powerful package👍Thanks Toth
Yep you could check the boxes and get the car you were longing for. Has all the stuff to mix it up in the quarter even stop lights I suppose. The best part is nobody knew, yep a sleeper. I like it!
Plain ol’ unabashed Le Mans. Not pretending to be anything other than what it is, a cool Pontiac. I’d much rather see, and own, this, than another GTO clone. The one thing that’d make this Le Mans better is if it still had the original 400. But by not being the original mill, that just means I would not feel guilty about tweaking the engine with some go fast. I like it.
talk about clean.,., worth twice the price . owning a 73 transam i can see why he didnt want the rubbers / urethane bumper put on…the lemans sport bumper should have been used for a TRANS AM bumper. some say the ta bumper can be fixed with todays windshield sealant. it has 20 minute repair time … woops off track sorry…
In 1970, I wouldn’t have ordered a Pontiac like this. Now, with 55 years of hindsight, I’m thinking whoever ordered this ordered the perfect 70 Pontiac. Nice car. GLWTS.
Yes, very nice, had one 1970 400 sport, not that fully optioned, no buckets floor shift. Thought all Lemans sports came with the GTO type interior.? Then again dealer orders where made what the customers wanted
This is a very nice unmolested Pontiac Lemans with some nice options looking like a sleeper with that drivetrain and the power windows and power bench seat. I would not change a thing and I hope nobody else does either. Another piece of American muscle car history saved!
I will make another comment The price is right and If I had more garage space this would be my choice!
Ended at $11.201.
