If an affordable Bow-Tie project is on your radar, this 1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landau could be a contender. It has a few cosmetic faults, but the low odometer reading and the V8 under the hood more than compensate. The first owner selected some desirable factory options, making life aboard this classic pretty comfortable. The next journey for this turnkey gem could be to a new home, and I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Jack M. for spotting it listed here on Craigslist in Mantua, Ohio. The seller set their price at $6,750 OBO.

Ah, 1977. It seems like only yesterday! The first Star Wars movie caused box office chaos, Atari released its revolutionary video game console, and, unless you believe the rumors, Elvis left the building. It is also the year that this Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landau rolled off the line. It marked the final production year of the Second Generation, when “Colonnade” styling replaced traditional Hardtops as manufacturers braced for tighter rollover legislation that never emerged. The first owner ordered this gem in Firethorn Red with a matching Landau top. The paint looks remarkably good for its age, with a healthy shine and no major cosmetic issues. I wish the same were true for the vinyl, which exhibits severe deterioration. It is beyond salvation, and, since it is a potential moisture trap, the buyer should remove or replace it promptly to prevent rust from developing. It would be a shame if that happened, because this garage-kept Monte Carlo appears to be rock-solid. I see nothing in the images raising concern, and the seller states that there are no issues. The trim looks very respectable for its age, and the tinted glass is clear.

Powering this Monte Carlo is the range-topping 350ci V8. What makes the car interesting for me is the Sales Brochure. Manufacturers typically avoided quoting engine power during this period because it almost inevitably drew unfavorable comparisons with the pre-emission days. However, Chevrolet boldly claimed that the 350 produced 170hp. This Monte Carlo feeds its ponies to a Posi rear end via a three-speed Turbo 350 automatic transmission. Given its luxury car leanings, the presence of power steering and power brakes is unsurprising. The seller doesn’t mention evidence supporting their mileage claim, meaning we must take it at face value. They recently replaced the valve springs, shocks, and the steering damper. They say that the car runs and drives well, with no mechanical issues or shortcomings.

This Monte Carlo’s interior demonstrates that condition is sometimes a matter of perspective. The seller uses the term “like new” to describe this car, although I beg to differ. The front seatcover is obviously split on the driver’s side, and it is unclear what may hide beneath the dash cover. However, the back seat looks nice, the carpet is acceptable for a driver-grade classic, and the door trims are undamaged. Life aboard this Chevy should be pretty comfortable, because the first owner equipped the interior with air conditioning, power windows, and a functioning factory radio/8-track player.

Cars produced during the Malaise Era typically spent decades in the automotive wilderness. Enthusiasts focused on cars produced earlier that offered better performance, or on those that rolled off the line later, when manufacturers had made inroads into recovering lost engine power through emerging technology. However, times change, and these cars are now viewed as an affordable alternative for those considering a first classic purchase. This 1977 Monte Carlo Landau ticks that box, and lifting its appearance shouldn’t cost its next owner a fortune. That makes it worth more than a passing glance.
