9-Passenger Mopar: 1964 Plymouth Fury

In the 1960s, the Fury was Plymouth’s version of the Chevy Impala and the Ford Galaxie. The problem was that the Chrysler division’s full-size cars had been downsized in 1962-64 because of some bad intel as to what the competition was doing. So, for three years, they were competing with a car slightly smaller than the others. This made them popular in NASCAR, but not so much with John Q. Public, and Plymouth was a distant third in sales behind Chevy and Ford. This 1964 Fury station wagon is the 9-passenger version and we’re told runs great. Now in Newville, Pennsylvania, it has loads of patina from living out in California. It’s available here on eBay where the bidding holds at $12,000. Thanks for the Mopar tip, Larry D!

As the story goes, Chrysler execs got word that Chevy was shrinking its full-size cars for 1962, so that’s the direction Plymouth and Dodge went. But it turned out not to be true, so the smaller vehicles would ride on a reduced B-body unibody platform that would eventually serve as the basis of the company’s “new” intermediates in 1965. Plymouth fell behind the others as recently as 1964 with the production of 551,000 automobiles, of which 88,000 were the Fury and (of those) 4,500 copies of the Fury 9-passenger wagon were built, making the latter a seldom seen commodity these days.

The seller bought this wagon to fix up and restore, but not long after starting the process another transport caught his attention, so this Plymouth must go. It runs better than it looks with no ongoing attention needed now on the 361 cubic inch V8 or automatic transmission (the last year for the push-button versions of the TorqueFlite). At nearly 80,000 miles, about 1,000 of those were put on by the seller before he/she fell in love with something else.

We’re told that the blue paint is original and has loads of Left Coast patina. But where you find surface rust, something bigger can be lurking, though the seller says the car has “very little rust.” From the photos, I’d be concerned about what lingers beneath the side rear windows, tailgate, and doors. Also, due to its unibody construction, repairing damage to the underbelly can sometimes be tricky. But these are cool old wagons and it might be fun to tool around in this one as-is for a while as they’re only original once.

The bid jumped from $2500 to $12000 in one bid. You’re right. Somethings fishy in Denmark.

Im a fan of wagons especially Plymouth’s since I spent my youth in the back of a 55 Belvedere and then a 60 both with V8s. My brother got my moms old 65 same color as this one. Patina to me is way over rated. Who knows what lurks below the surface on this one.

I bought that same car in that color but with a 318 engine in Connecticut in 1969. Rockers were well on the way to rusting off but when i took it to Alabama and kept it for many trouble free years the rusting stopped. One winter morning I backed into it with our new Volvo wagon. The Volvo dented, the Plymouth was fine. I traded it to a fellow who then painted my truck in exchange. Win-win. It stayed on the road for many years. First car of many that went over 100,000 miles.

I think I,ll adopt rocks. What a bunch of phony bidders or some really hard up people for a car–to pay out alot of money. For a car that still needs alot of work
