We all know that four and/or five decade-old pickups are hotter than (insert un-pc phrase here) and here’s another great looking one. This 1977 GMC Sierra 2500 looks almost nice enough to be plucked from an old advertising piece. This gem is listed on eBay with no reserve and a current bid price of just over $800! What?! The seller doesn’t have an official buy-it-now button on the listing but at the bottom of the listing they say that $7,500 will end the auction. It’s located in Tacoma, Washington, home of the famous LeMay “America’s Car Museum”. Let’s check out this nice GMC.
I always got a kick out of GM referring to the third-generation pickups as “Rounded-Line” when they were almost the very definition of a boxy design, especially when they’re compared to the actual rounded-line previous generation trucks.
This example looks as nice as can be, I’m flabbergasted at the low bids on this one. Maybe buyers want 1/2-ton trucks instead of 3/4-ton trucks? I would expect this truck to be at $5,000 at least by this point in the auction, $835 is absolutely crazy. I bet the seller is wishing that they would have had a reserve on this beauty.
The interior looks as nice as the exterior does. It would be $800 for new carpet and seat covers, which this one already has, including a new windshield and headliner. Why is the bid so low? Why, guys, why? NADA is at $15,200 for an average retail value, this truck sure looks better than average to me. WHY?!
Is this why? This monster is a 454 cubic-inch V8 – did GMC/Chevy even offer a 454 in a 1977 pickup? I can find a 400 but not 454. 1981 is the first instance that I can find of a 454 being used in a third-generation GMC/Chevy pickup and unfortunately the seller doesn’t list the VIN to look it up. In any case, this one “runs nice” and “drives great will drive anywhere no problem”. Have any of you owned a 1977 GMC Sierra? Why do you think this one is priced so low on the auction?
It’s shot up to 2k since you posted this.
Thank you, Mr. G!! Made my day. ( my truck just got more valuable) 1st, while my truck is a “’77 High Sierra”, it has little in common with this. 1st, I read, the 454 was an option in ’77 for the trailer towing package. This truck, with those little brackets behind the doors, indicates it had a slide-in camper. Somebody detailed the heck out of this truck, probably already a nice example. While anybody even remotely thinking about a truck like this, gas mileage is the least of your concerns. For towing anything, the 454 is the preferred choice, as the 350 falls a bit short, and gets about the same mileage. As nice as this is, it shows, the sellers of these older pickups are a bit optimistic in their pricing. While $800 is an insult, 5g’s is more like it, but 2 grand as of this writing? Might not be such a hot market after all.
My cousin had a 1969 C-30 with a 454, 4 speed, factory.
No he doesn’t. The 454 wasn’t out until 1970.
yES, Howard, back in the day, my neighbor bought a new 77 Grand Sierra ( I don’t believe it was a 4 wd) it had the 454 for a camper ` the neighbor was disgusted that at best the ” dealer prep” was a hosing off ( what did we know back then?) and proceeded to wash and WAX it and was going to take it back to the dealer and demand a ” refund” of her ” dealer prep” IDK what the final results were.. but as time wore on, she still kept it waxed and serviced
Dig the horns.
454-LF8 was an option on the C20 for ’77. Here’s a great resource for checking options and powertrains on GM Trucks:

77 was the final year for the 454 in regular production. So it may well have had that from the factory.
False. The 454 was available with the camper or towing package in 1978. My mom’s suburban has a factory 454.
454 was available option back to 74 in this body style. Had several friends in high school with them.
I think 73s had the 454, Joe….Cheyenne?
Beautiful truck with years left in it,not bad money.I’m not a GM guy,but I know I couldn’t replace my 99′ Ford Lariat for $45K.I believe that if it were a short bed, might be gone.Just my opinion.
I think I’m going to have to watch this auction. Already calculated costs to get it home and subtracted from what would be my high bid. I can’t imagine that it will go for that, but I have been looking for a good, clean pickup and this is that.
and the bid price ($7100) has gone over my anticipated high bid. I’m out.
I don’t quite understand how someone would bid $7100, and not just go ahead and do the BIN at $7500? Is the last $400 so dear, that it changes the value or ability to purchase?
IMO, if you want it, and are willing to bid that close to a guaranteed transaction, why try to save a few bucks and risk losing the truck?
When GMC’s and Chevrolet’s were actually built on separate assembly lines :) Nice truck !
The 454 was available, but only with 2wd. 4wd was only offered with small blocks. Dad had a ’78 half-ton Suburban Silverado with a 454. A very nice truck for its day, though even today’s strippers are better equipped, and fairly car-like to drive or ride in. Shortly after, government regs changed and you could only get the 454 with a gvw over 8500 lbs. Dad wanted another ‘burb with the big engine and got one of those. That thing was all truck in ride, handling, nvh, etc. He kept the ’78 for many years as a work truck, but sold the heavy duty one after only a couple of years.
This truck has led a hard life and has been gussied up to sell. There’s many clues to this: Sagging rear springs, Chevrolet hubcaps on a GMC, Krylon® engine overhaul, mismatched dash and door wood appliques, a brand new frt bumper under a cracked and faded plastic grille, a patched exhaust system, and what’s with those odd welded-on bed/frame reinforcements?. I’ll stay away from this one. Caveat Emptor.
I love the seller’s quote ” i have scene these sell… wow
GM put 454s in light trucks up to 97.
I had a 1977 Chevy Silverado C10 short bed with a factory 454 auto 2wd. Black with red interior sure wish I still had it that baby moved.

Hmmm, twice in a row that my comments aren’t coming through. I didn’t think I wrote anything offensive….
Welcome to my world. Apparently, the system targets troublemakers,,,
And we’re such chronic troublemakers….
It would appear the owner has a worn out LMC catalog. I don’t think it’s the “cream puff” it’s being presented to be.
Tilt wheel and cruise control, but no AC.
I’m with you Nick , they optioned this truck up , But didn’t get the ac option ? ? ? Really ?. Funny how the oil pan looks unpainted but the engine paint looks brand new. Seems to have a little much rust under the truck in relationship to the exterior paint and interior detail.
The vehicle description offered by the seller scares me. “Tommy” has nothing but praise for his truck. There is no mention of anything less than excellent, there are no close shots of the body, no history documentation and no offers to check out the truck in person.
He has a “Buy it Now” option for $7500 highlighted in pink, but without a link to do so.
I’m thinking this is an incredible steal, or a box of trouble. If someone here buys or checks out the truck, please let us know how it went!
Now 7100…that escalated quickly :)
Nice truck…having driven through the hot desert in a 454 no a/c equipped Chevy I can tell you this…you absolutely want a/c as the cab on that drive felt like we were sitting in a furnace
Drove (rode) cross country in a Dodge A108 window van in the summer of 69′. From California to Florida twice. Ughhhh No ac, plus the heat off the engine cover inside that big metal shed doing 70 mph. ALL my vehicles since that summer MUST have working ac.
I hear you, Sparkster. We drove from Los Angeles to Tucson and back. In August. I was starting to rethink the definition of firewall on that trip. haha
The happy part of that story is me and a bud drove to Tucson to buy a 1946 Harley Davidson WLA 45c.i. But the heat coming through both the firewall and the floorboards roasted us. We made multiple rest stops to soak our tshirts in cold water and tie them around our heads like turbans lol
“…Why is the bid so low? Why, guys, why?…”
LWB & woman don’t make the dollar men do (yellow paint reference)?
I’m lost….
When I click on the EBAY link it takes me to 2004 GMC. What gives?
Relisted.

I have one very similar to this. A ’78 GMC Sierra Classic C35 one ton, single rear wheels and 9,000 GVW suspension option. Reverse the color sheme for mine, light beige down the sides, with the darker beige being the primary, including the roof. Mine is also a 454/TH400 with dual exhaust dual fuel tank truck with tilt wheel (no cruise), intermittent wipers, and factory A/C. Originally and still is a southern California truck with zero rust. Love the truck, it is awesome.
Cool truck. My dad had a 1978 Suburban Trailering Special 2wd with a 454. Pulled our 28ft boat with ease all while getting 5mpg! We would haul that big boat from Ohio to the southern oceanside states every summer.
