Affordable 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

If your heart yearns for a 1968 Camaro Convertible with a V8/4-speed drivetrain, you generally need to brace for an outlay of $30,000 to find the clean car of your dreams. Perfection pushes that figure significantly higher, making our feature car look pretty attractive. It isn’t perfect, but the new owner could address most of this Convertible’s issues in a home workshop. If I haven’t provided enough information to whet your appetite, the seller’s decision to list this Camaro for $12,000 could prove the tipping point. It is listed here on Craigslist in Tawas City, Michigan. I must say a big thank you to eagle-eyed Barn Finder Pat L. for spotting this promising classic.

The seller indicates this Camaro is part of an estate sale, which may explain the affordable asking price. While some estate beneficiaries might hold out for high prices, others will settle for less to end the process quickly. That could be the case here, and the supplied photos and information suggest that this car’s new owner could be another beneficiary! Its Cordovan Maroon paint shines well, although it’s unclear whether the vehicle received any prior restoration work. With the seller revealing older patches in the floors, that is possible. The paint sports chips and scratches, but its presentation is acceptable for a driver-grade car. The manual Black convertible top fits tightly, although the rear window shows developing cloudiness. The only visible external rust is this spot in the rocker below the driver’s door. The buyer could replace the rocker, but a well-crafted patch should do the trick. The seller says the floor patches aren’t perfect, but the installer eliminated any rust and applied an undercoat to leave the floors solid. The same can’t be said for the trunk pan, which looks pretty battered and ordinary. It may prove repairable, but I think potential owners need to brace for the cost of pan replacement. There’s a significant hole in the pan on the driver’s side, and I’m wondering whether it might be associated with the rear suspension issues the seller mentions that render the vehicle unroadworthy. The exterior trim looks fine for a vehicle of this type, and there are no glass issues.

If this Camaro hasn’t already tempted potential buyers, its mechanical story could prove the tipping point. Lifting the hood reveals a 327ci V8 that sends power to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The engine’s specifications are unclear, but the driver should have at least 210hp at their disposal. However, I suspect the new Holley Brawler 600cfm carburetor and Black Widow dual exhaust with a crossover pipe may have liberated a few additional ponies. The seller indicates the car recently received a power front disc brake conversion, a new starter, an alternator, a fuel tank, and a battery. They treated the Camaro to a tune-up that included plugs, plug wires, and a cap. The engine is strong, and the transmission shifts as it should, but the vehicle isn’t roadworthy. The listing indicates it needs rear suspension work, but not what it comprises. The buyer needs to trailer it home and can then devise strategies for returning it to active duty.

If considered purely as a driver-grade classic, this Camaro’s interior needs very little. The Black vinyl upholstery is free from rips and tears, the carpet tells a similar story, and the dash pad hasn’t succumbed to the ravages of UV rays. The wheel is cracked, and some painted surfaces require a refresh. However, there’s nothing that might break the bank. I think there’s an aftermarket radio/cassette player occupying the radio’s rightful spot, but I can’t see any further additions.

Some classics appear in today’s market, and you feel deep in your heart that the seller will face an uphill battle to send their vehicle to a new home. However, cars like this 1968 Camaro Convertible sit at the opposite end of the spectrum. It hit the market less than a day ago, and its condition, specifications, and recent work suggest that interested parties must act fast if they wish to avoid disappointment. It shows enormous promise, but would you consider pursuing it further?

Look at the ad on Craigs List first. This thing has some major body cancer.
50K plus to get it back in good shape.

Watch for this car to be listed in the spring by the new buyer, at double the asking price. I would love to have this car, if I didn’t have to cross the border to get it.

I helped someone sell a Fiat to a guy from Toronto from here in Buffalo. He got it over the Peace Bridge, but it does seem as if the required documentation is kind of up to the Customs person you run into on any given day.

Yeah, I guess that I should keep my passport up to date, for unexpected emergencies like this.

Upon further review, the driver-side door fit looks a little sketchy and there might be a big question about the rear suspension issue mentioned on the CL ad. back to the Bills game!

More than just the trunk pan, that rear tub is going to take a LOT of work…

The image of the trunk tells me that this convertible is missing its vibration dampers, also known as “cocktail shakers” – there should be four, one at each corner. Without them, this baby will have a real “shaken, not stirred” harmonic vibration.

Passenger front fenders been replaced, it is missing the side marker light . This could be a fun little car to go top down cruising next spring and summer if the issues are straightened out, the price is right . I like it, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

I see coil overs on the rear. Lower spring / shock mounting plate isn’t correct. Bet this thing needs rails.

Snapped is the right word, this salty fright pig has a lot of lipstick. Take a welders pick hammer when you do the inspection in the trunk, and underneath, not drivable? Is the whole rear clip ( leaking convertible) going to fall off? Who sold the new gas tank and exhaust without telling the owner it’s not a good idea to drive on Michigan’s velvet smooth roads ?
