Affordable Collector Car: 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra

We’ve seen some strong numbers lately for Fox body Mustang Cobras, and rightly so: these cars have been hiding in plain sight for years, obviously destined to become collector’s items but not necessarily sought out like they are now. Fortunately, it remains one of those emerging collector cars that you can still buy for reasonable money when it’s not a museum piece, and there’s a good chance they’ll continue to appreciate long after the purchase. This example appears to be such a car, as it has 75,232 miles on the clock and is listed here on craigslist in Philadelphia for $22,750. It will come with its original SVT certificate and window sticker.

The Cobra apparently doesn’t have an underhood modifications, despite other tell-tale signs of being modified. The seller does disclose he’s upgraded the suspension somewhat, and they seem like worthwhile modifications that will make the Cobra far more enjoyable to drive at the limit. These include Eibach lowering springs, new shocks, bump steer kit, camber plates, and a full alignment. New Michelin Pilot AS3+ tires have been installed, too. This is exactly how I’d treat one of these Cobras if it were mine – it’s got plenty of power from the factory, but firming up the suspension will definitely make it a more entertaining driver.

Now, the interior would suggest there’s more going on that just some suspension tuning. The big aftermarket gauges and shift knob are the kind of enhancements I usually attribute to a modified car I wouldn’t want to own, but then again, plenty of owners seem to think the auxiliary gauges are a must-have when driving a high-performance car. Regardless, I’d lose them immediately after taking possession, unless there is something wrong with the basic gauges included in the cluster. The seats look good and the same goes for the center console and door panels, and there don’t appear to be any cracks in the dash.

There are some enhancements noted under the hood, including a cold air intake, but the seller mostly focuses on the maintenance updates he’s tackled. These include a new water pump, spark plugs, plug wires, rear pinion seal, rebuilt calipers, resurfaced rotors, fresh fluids throughout, and more. The sale will include some parts he never installed, including 3.73 gears, new headlights, and new fog lights. Overall, this Mustang Cobra is a clean example with some minor modifications that can easily be reversed if you’re looking to own a bone-stock car, but I’d leave the enhancements in place, save for the gauges. Would you modify it further or keep it the way it is?

I remember reading that some non fuel gages on some fords were not very accurate at all & not much better than idiots lights – not sure what models or years.

Overall the car looks good but I too would ditch the gauge package. The other mods are common and reasonable. The advantage here is that this one will make someone a great driver, just take it out and have fun with it.

Is this price about right for a lightly modified moderate mileage Cobra? Not too long ago this amount would have bought a low mileage example, but I know prices on these have risen dramatically in recent years.

Assuming you can bargain some, the price for this car is about market IMO. They are getting a lot of notice at the auctions. Nice driver that will appreciate in value. Shifter is a mod also (Hurst).

BBK cold air inlet is the only mod I see under the hood, nice Hurst shifter not the shorter ripper shifter, clean car with mods that only enhance the driving experience, why change it. Install the 3.73 ‘s, although these 5.0’s are a little rough getting off the line with stock gearing. I can’t remember if the Cobra had 3.08’s or a lower gear…..stock.
Enjoy the blue oval on the road.
