Affordable Garage Find: 1965 Ford Mustang Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1965 Ford Mustang here on Craigslist has plenty of grime present on the outside and a few parts missing, but as I try to imagine what the body looks like underneath that layer of layer of soot I think this one’s fairly solid, and at $4,200 it’s probably not going to take long for somebody to snap this pony right up.  The seller also mentions that’s the asking price, and maybe if he’s truly ready to free up that garage area you might be trailering this one away for even less if you’re a skilled negotiator, so head on over to Kansas City, Missouri, and perhaps the two of you can strike up a deal.  We’d like to thank reader T.J. for another great tip here!

The background shared is that the pony belonged to the seller’s father, who purchased it back in ’86 with only 18,000 miles on the odometer.  It’s now showing 124k, so Dad got some good use before it was parked approximately two years ago, but even now the son says the Mustang is still all original.  From what I can tell, the body seems to be in good condition overall with the panels retaining an acceptable fit, and I’m sort of glad the rocker trim is removed so we can view the lower metal areas, which appear quite decent on both sides.

I was pleased to find a 289 under the hood instead of Ford’s inline 6, which is said to have been running fine when the car was parked.  It’s not stated why the belts and some of the frontal components were pulled off, but hopefully, the next owner will be inheriting a motor that will still turn.  At this point, it probably needs a rebuild, but with an initial investment at just over the 4 grand mark, there should be plenty left to get the drivetrain operational again.

The only thing the seller mentions regarding the interior is that it’s in good shape for the age, which doesn’t sound like an unreasonable assessment although it’s hard to see the passenger space for the parts inside.  No photos are provided from underneath, but if this one’s as solid down below as it appears on top I’m feeling these are some strong and healthy bones here to be working with.  What are your thoughts on this 1965 Mustang, and its asking price of $4,200?

I thought this one sounded too good to be true. Somebody probably told him they could get five times as much for it.

Stolen… Meaning whoever snapped it up got a deal

Without a full set of pictures of the entire vehicle, it is impossible to say what the worth is. Obviously, something was going to be done in the engine bay, and it appears it has laid dormant for a long time as indicated by the rust on components. The radio was hacked in, the dash pad assuredly cracked, and someone appears to have been planning something. What?

In any case, the posting is gone so we will never know. Sometimes I wonder if all of these CL ads are even genuine.

Why don’t clean these first? Ok. It’s been sitting. We get it. Were it I. I would have cleaned everything so one could assess the condition better… Are they selling bags of barn dust to sprinkle?

Ya know it’s amazing how sellers lack of intelligence is present!
I see factory under dash dealer installed Air, A 289, and a Rally Pac which was usually only on the Shelby’s at the time!
The price advertised is a great bargain if for real!

Rally Pacs were a dealer option and you could put one on any engine. They’re still sold today. But you’re right – I certainly would have mentioned the dealer-installed air conditioning. Most of these had 289s, and a couple is the least rare of the early Mustangs. It would take crawling under the car for a good examination to determine its worth.

Shelbys didn’t have rally packs. They had a fiberglass custom gauge pod that mounted in the center of the dash pad in 1965. In 1966 it was just a dash mounted tach. Rally packs were standard mustangs options. With a 6k tach for all but the Hi-Po cars which got the 8k tach
