Air-Cooled Barn Find: 1963 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

Parked in a barn since 1980 this ’63 Vw Karmann Ghia is complete and untouched. Purchased from the original owner in the 1970’s the current owner drove the car for a few years before parking it. There is some rust to contend with, but this is a nice swing axle Ghia that could likely be revived with some fresh gas and a new battery. There has been quite a bit of interest in this Ghia as 31 bids have been placed so far to the current bid price of $4,050. Check it out here on eBay out of Newark, Delaware.

The engine compartment is dusty and dirty, but these old flat fours just won’t die. Pour a little oil in the cylinders, turn it over slowly, and you are likely ready to fire her up. The owner is not certain of the mileage but he speculates the mileage is either 80,445 or 180,445.

There is light mold and dust to be found inside, but the interior appears to only be in need of a good cleaning. An interior heater box flex tube is on the floor, and the key is still in the ignition. Give this one a good wipe down and some tweaking and it would be in fair enough shape to enjoy as is.

While the body is in original condition, this Ghia is in fair enough shape to be appreciated from the 20 foot mark. The rockers have rust issues, and the seller has also mentioned that the wheel arches and the front fenders above the headlights have some rust concerns as well. If you desire an older VW project that you could drive and repair all at the same time, then this Ghia may be the ticket. Would you take on this VW project?

Ah, the venerable VW Karmann Ghia, known to those of us that drove a 1300cc boxer 2 seater as The Common Gear…

As a kid, I helped cut up 2 of these and a couple bugs to make dune buggy’s. They were kinda crusty, but the floor boards were great. Sure brings back good memories of ppl no longer with us.

Agreed, AngryMike-a simpler time to some ends, with good people to be remembered in that “Kodak moment”..

These are proof that the Italians invented rust but then licenced the technology to the Germans…..

If I had the room I would jump on this. They are delightful cars, good daily drivers, lots of fun slowly, and lots of style. What’s not to like? Call the Seller and ask him /her what they want for it. If the number is not irrational, write the check, and enjoy!
