While I know we sometimes tire of sellers who go deep into the weeds of how their car’s respective options set it apart from the crowd, there are some models that really do feature an incredible assortment of desirable OEM options. This 1987 Chevrolet Corvette convertible would be a rarity for its color alone, but it also features the 4+3 manual transmission, G92 performance axle ratio, and has the optional tan convertible roof. Combine that with low miles and sharp BBS wheels, and you have a looker of a C4 Corvette that won’t easily be repeated. Find it here on eBay with bids to just under $8,000 and no reserve.
We all know the C4 is equally loved and maligned at times owing to so many examples being tired and low on options. There’s no denying that when set up correctly, these are absolute performance bargains that will deliver many miles of cheap diving pleasure. I’m convinced the market will wake up at some point on special cars like this one, and while it may not sell for a lot today, the next owner will likely realize a profit when it comes time to sell. The gold paint – I get it, it’s not to everyone’s tastes – but after decades of only seeing red C4 Corvettes come up for sale, I can appreciate the heck out of a car that doesn’t look like all the others, and the color-matched BBS wheels don’t hurt, either.
The manual gearbox is a fairly rare find in any C4 Corvette, simply because so many of them were equipped with automatics, which is how many muscle car owners prefer to roll. The 4+3 gearbox is a novelty in and of itself but finding one bolted to a gold C4 convertible with the performance axle ratio just pushes this car into the near-unrepeatable territory. The seller claims only 7,000 cars came with the G92 axle ratio and that only 1,700 cars came with the tan soft top. The condition appears to be as nice on the inside as the outside, with no obvious flaws in the leather, dash, or carpets. The seller reports the power options all work as does the Bose stereo.
The engine bay is in excellent order too, just like the rest of the car. The seller reports the underside of the car is just as clean as the rest of the body and interior, and with just 54,000 miles, it sure seems like the condition validates the low mileage. The Corvette is located in Wisconsin, which isn’t necessarily known for being a hotbed of dry, rust-free cars, but this one was likely a summer driver-only to remain in this sort of condition with under 60,000 miles. Like I said, it may go cheap today, but don’t be surprised to see the price of rare C4s rise in the coming years.
I love everything about this C4 Corvette convertible even the color combination. I’ve never driven a Corvette with the 4+3 gearbox, but really, how hard could it be. Going to be watching this closely and may toss in a bid.
4+3 is easy to drive. It is a standard 4 speed with an electronic overdrive hung off it. All you do is push the button on the console you see between the power window switches. Get the car running around 3000 rpm on the highway and engage the overdrive and you are cruising along at an economical 1500 rpm. The gold metallic paint is truly a rare color.
Well I spoke too soon. Too many owners for any one car for me.
Why are too many owners an issue? The convertible C4 is a beautiful vette.
Love the name of the town in the cheese head state…..Me No Money, ha ha ha!
It’s pronounced “meh-NAW-mun-EE”, similar to the Muppet song.
I had an 89 Chevy truck in this gold with a red two tone so I’m biased. The colors, 4 spd and condition put this over the edge for me. I love it.
I have a 4+3 87 convertible. The gearbox isn’t as bad as people describe. I drive mine daily aggressively, you just need to change the atf and filter every 15k miles. I bought mine in December 2019 with 38k miles and I’m up to 58k. It’s my DD, but covid kept the miles down. It was an experiment to see if I could actually daily drive a decently cared for 30+ year old sports car. The answer is yes, if you don’t mind more service than a newer car.
Beautiful color combo that really pops. The wheels look great on it. Only thing I would do is go put back the giant “breadbox” pad on the passenger side. The filler panels never seem to sit quite right.
Looks like something isn’t stock about the seats either. Who cares? If this stays under 12k it’s still a bargain in my opinion. I wish it were closer, I like the color enough to trade up from the black one I drive.
Just looking at those BBS wheels is enough to make me sick! It maybe a great aftermarket wheel and has been on just about every sports car foreign and domestic. I just can’t get best the style. It does nothing to improve this nice Corvette.
I purchased a new 1986 corvette in late 1985. I had to order it because every single dealer had only autos in stock. It was bare bones with cloth interior and a manual transmission.$30,000 out the door…
Those are not BBS wheels…look at the center caps.
I believe they are Ultra wheels. If so, that is a pretty decent brand.
I love the look of this car – just so much different than most C4s that you see.
Beautiful car. I remember when this generation Corvette was intro’d. I was way too young at the time to drive a car. I find it way more attractive than the current generation.
