Alloy-Bodied Survivor: 1967 Maserati Mistral

The Lucky Collector Car Auction Fall Classic will feature an incredible assortment of modern and vintage collector cars and trucks, spanning from historic vintage automobiles to emerging hero cars from the 1980s. Like all of their auctions, there’s something for everyone, and this 1967 Maserati Mistral alloy coupe listed here on the Lucky Collector Car Auction website is an example of one of the more desirable cars it has on offer at the upper end of the spectrum. This car is numbers matching with one older repsray and a nicely patina’d interior.

The Maserati has been with the current caretaker since 1984 and resides in Delaware. The current owner has added about 2,500 miles since taking possession of the car, which begs the question as to whether they were the one to install a minibar in the rear cargo area. Yes, this Maserati has its own minibar which seems quite inappropriate given that shot glasses and a high-performance machine rarely mix well, but at the same time, it seems incredibly appropriate for the high-flyer that likely was the first recorded owner.

The interior is believed to be mostly original although the listing notes that portions of the leather have been dyed and this has exposed some flaws as a result. The biggest issue is the dyed areas don’t match the original color and that cracking is now evident. Still, with the dashboard in great shape featuring original ornamentation and a classic three-spoked wood steering wheel, I think we’re all glad the cabin wasn’t messed with beyond some attempts at dying because it really is in wonderfully patina’d condition.

The engine is a delightful 3.7L inline six with an aluminum block, DOHC, twin-plug ignition, and triple Weber carburetors. The way the listing reads makes it sound as if this Mistral was pressed back into duty after several years out of service, with recent maintenance including “… cleaning and resetting of the distributor, fabrication of replacement carburetor plumbing, dipping and sealing of the twin fuel tanks, installation of a Malpassi fuel filter and Facet fuel pump, replacement of the fuel lines, fuel hoses, and cooling hoses, a coolant flush, and a tune-up.” Overall, it looks like a great way to get into an unrestored vintage Maserati that will only keep going up in value.

    Lovely design.
Probably inspired the Jensen Interceptor (back half) and the Triumph GT6 (front half.)
Congratulations to whomever has the winning bid.

By coincidence, a very similar red Mistral just failed to sell for $95k on another auction site. That one was a 4L and still had its injection system. BTW, the Mistral predates the Interceptor.

That’s why I said it likely inspired the Interceptor.

I would have it modified by Gas Monkey Garage.

Had one of these when I moved to Orlando in 1973, silver. Took it with me to Martin County, lived on a boat and thought I had money until a starter motor and a right window motor went out. Push started it at a handful of bars while drinking Crown to soothe my sorrows. Traded it for $3500 and a brand new El Camino. I’ve been seen crying every time on of these crosses the block. Oh well.

What is going on with the back of that car…license plate frame, crooked tail lights and bumper, antenna placement…everything looks a bit “off”.

I had a Masarati 3500 GT back in the early 70’s, and this got me thinking that it would be nice to relive those heady times.
    Then I noticed THE SNOW!!
There’s no way I would consider this car because of the nightmare of rust.
I really do buy and sell a lot of cars but I only consider cars or trucks from western Arizona, southern Nevada and Southern California.
Good luck with the sale and, especially, good luck to the buyer. I hope this isn’t a “more dollars than sense” purchase for you.
