Back Yard Find: 1979 Pontiac Firebird Formula

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The second generation of the Pontiac Firebird enjoyed a 12-year run from 1970 to 1981. Four models were offered, including the “base” Firebird, Esprit, Formula, and Trans Am. The Formula was a performance edition, overshadowed by the glitzier Trans Am during the Smokey and the Bandit movie era. The seller offers a ’79 Formula that has been sitting outside for more than 10 years and has had some of its parts liberated. Located in Oxford, Georgia, only two bids have been submitted at $1,000 here on eBay, and the reserve is likely further north of that. Once again, Mitchell G. comes through with an interesting tip!

Styling of the Firebird was updated a bit in 1979, but only an expert could tell the ’79s to ‘81s apart. The Formula once had a 400 cubic inch V8 as standard fare, but a scaling down of horsepower in the 1970s made it an option in 1979. The VIN provided by the seller indicates this Formula was built with Pontiac’s 301 CI engine, which, with a 4-barrel carburetor, could only muster 150 hp. At 143,000 miles, perhaps it’s the original motor in this Poncho, but we’re guessing.

Out of 211,000 Firebirds assembled in 1979, the Formula was the slowest seller at 25,000 copies, making it the rarest of the breed. Due to sitting for years, there is rust associated with the car, which the seller describes as minor. That may be optimistic, especially considering the amount associated with the wraparound rear window. Some of the interior has taken flight, presenting a clean slate for the buyer.

A selling point might be that the car has its 7-inch “Snowflake” rims, but they’re going to need work. And do you start replacing engine parts in the hope this V8 can be coaxed back to life? Perhaps it was the reason the car began serving as a donor, so fresh power may be preferred unless this Pontiac happens to be numbers-matching. There is no title, as Georgia didn’t bother with them 40+ years ago.

Two barrel intake ???? Can’t be a 265 it was an 80-81 only option. A two barrel 301 in a Formula talk about cheap. Well it could be a decent parts car because one would have to pour in a lot of moolah to get it back to drivable

Minor rust????…sitting outside for ten years isn’t minor in my opinion…but still good luck on the sale.

It’s obvious that this was, or is, just a parts car, nothing more.

I miss my 79, 400, 4 speed, WS6 Mayan Red Formula. My fiancé had a 79 Trans Am, T-top, Atlantis Blue, automatic that was paid for. I still owed on my Formula so we sold it to get married. Wish I still had it sitting beside her 79 Trans Am sitting in my garage. Yes, still have both the wife and the TA.

I believe that he or she should have taken the one grand and given the buyer a big hug.
