Bare Bones: 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle 300

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

When you think of a 1960s Chevy Chevelle, you’ll probably come up with either a Malibu or SS 396. But that would be overlooking the cheapo entry-level models, the 300 and the 300 Deluxe. These cars had few frills and most often came with a six-cylinder engine. The seller has a nice running 300 Deluxe 2-door sedan that may only need a new interior to continue as a daily driver. Located in Picayune, Mississippi, this running project is available here on eBay, where the current bid is $5,200 (reserve not met).

About three-quarters of the 1967 Chevelle 300 Deluxe coupes came with a 230 cubic inch I-6. And likely a large portion also had the “3-on-the-tree” manual transmission, both of which apply to the seller’s car. We wouldn’t be surprised if both were numbers-matching since the seller acquired the car last year from its original elderly owner. It runs and drives well with 90,000 miles on the odometer. These were simple cars with a lot less stuff to go wrong over the years.

This Chevy sports white over Grenada Gold paint, which we’re told are the original colors, but they have been reapplied once. While things look good from the outside, the interior is a bit of a mess. It looks as though someone’s cat got loose and ripped up the upholstery, but it’s really a matter of what happens after 59 years. The seller says the headliner needs a refresh, too.

We’re told the Chevy was bought new in Mississippi, so it looks like it’s been a lifelong resident. The seller may be able to share some of the stories the original owner imparted, and it’s a project that you can drive while you fix it up. When the Chevy changes hands, the current wheels will stay with the seller. But you’d have your choice between a set of Torque Thrust wheels or the stock steel rims with poverty hub cups. With any luck, this 300 will stay original rather than becoming (yet) another SS 396 clone.

Exactly, Russ-we DON’T NEED ANOTHER FAKE SS WHATEVER CHEVELLE. Fix the interior and drive it for cryin out loud, you almost never see one that’s not been given the SBC or whatever treatment.
Yes, to each their own but what do you want to bet that you’ll get more looks of approval and compliments whenever you open the hood to see a clean original I-6 there instead of some gaudy godawful chrome infested ad for JC Whitney sitting there.
Drive it proudly-it’s in better shape than most of the people of the same age that I know and more fun to be with at times!

I agree with Nevadahalfrack. Leave the Six and 3 speed manual trans. I’d go for the original steel wheels and hubcaps( I think the seller said they’re available). The exterior looks great. As has been joked about in the past, there are way more Super Sports out there now then Chevy actually originally built.

Drive it. How cool that it’s that original

Totally agree! I’d put on the steel wheels and dog dishes- maybe add a power brake booster, and enjoy it !!!

My 64 Chevelle vert had the 230 I6 rated at 155 ponies.
I would find better steel wheels with smaller white walls for time frame , redo interior and probably just add a two barrel (keep one barrel in storage),petronics electric ignition with larger diameter exhaust pipe and drive it.
Looks like a decent potential if reserve is right.

Yes, even rarer than an SS, most have become clones of SS cars and that’s been overdone to where it’s where I just walk on by to go see something like this.

As rough as the interior appears the biggest concern should be the water-stained rear seat. The water intrusion problem should be resolved before sinking a dime into the interior.

The repair to the left quarter panel is a bit different. A new owner might want to change that.

There’s not a thing wrong with a 230/250 six and a three on the tree. It’s interesting this car was delivered with the heater-delete option. With a new interior, the sheet metal repair, and a cleaned-up engine compartment this could be a fine automobile.

Heater was probably the option,no such thing as delete

There is a heater. It just doesn’t have any hoses connected.

    SS package was hardtop or conv.only, this wouldn’t make a clone at all,does need a V8 IMO…

Clean up the interior, put stock wheels and hub caps and leave the rest alone. That is what roamed the streets in mass quantities in the sixties.

LS1, 6sp auto and hydraulics to raise lower. That’s what it needs.

I’d forgotten there was ever a Chevelle 2 door sedan at all. This was its last year, from ’68 they did the post coupe instead which didn’t make it quite as obvious that you were too cheap to spring for either a hardtop or a second set of doors. Or both, but the two runaway biggest sellers were 2 door hardtops and 4 door sedans.

Leave it this way and no LS swaps. Find another one to do that with. Even put steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps on it. Nice and easy to work on.

An attractive car, I would rebuild that drivetrain and use it for cruising.

It’s nice ! Looks like the tiger from the ” The Hang Over ” Went for a ride ! I’d put some wide steelies 8-10s with poverty caps and a 396 big block, or build the 6 with a nice little turbo that could be a fun sleeper, with new interior keep the bench . Leave the 3 on the tree just for fun and paint it like a Smokey Yunick stock car no numbers . I like that black and gold .

The heater core is installed, but the hoses are disconnected. Heater core may be bad.

It would make a fun driver with a potent SBC and a Tremec 5-speed.

My first car had an interior like that, and it was only ten years old. 1963 Bel Air bought for $375.

I would love to find something like this that I could afford and needed a little work, so I could pass some time with my grandson, showing him how to manually shift a 3 on the tree, tune a car w/o a computer, replace an external fuel pump, maybe even remove the head for a valve job. All the other things that were so much simpler back then.

    Wow, you never see these

The Chevelle 300 in 66-67 had the roofline of the 64-65s. I didn’t even realize they existed in 67; I thought it was a 66 only thing

I don’t think they made an SS two door post?? Who would clone a post? I had one of these when was 18, bought and resold it. I do wish I had another one, but I would definitely small block it and paint it blue. I have a 2 door hardtop, red with a 350, still too slow. My Daughter still has her high school car I bought her, was a one owner 67 hardtop, bucket seat car with 6 cyl. auto. Hope to small block it someday.

Leave it be, just put black walls & steelies on it. Fix the water leak, re-stitch the interior & have at it.

very neat car. i will never understand why sellers list a car with a wheel/tire combo in the pics then say, “i am keeping them”. real stupid move. just put on the car what the buyer “will be getting”. the interior is a mess. i would redo the inside clean up the engine bay lose the trailer hitch and drive it. as everybody on here today has said no “SS” clone or a ‘LS” jammed down its throat. doubt that will happen though

Seller says the car is parked at his “restoration shop”. Guess he isn’t interested in restoring, just flipping. Probably wants $25,000 for it.

3 on the tree behind a inline 6, no ac, power brakes or power steering. I’m in. Though I’d want to upgrade to a 283 or 327 with a 4 spd. I like 2 door post, steel wheels …
Keep it simple, and no ss clones.

Back in ’74-’75 when I was working in the gas station a girl from N.J. was a student at a local college. She had one of these in a dark aqua color, same setup, six with a 3-on-the tree and power nothing. She was barely 4ft 6in tall and maybe 80lbs. She had to put pillows behind her so she was up far enough to push in the clutch. She used to come in with a whole carload of college girls. This one looks solid, but it looks like it has some body panel alignment issues with the right front fender. Maybe the original owner hit something before he sold it?

Sexiest wheels Chevy ever made……but he’s keeping them…..prefer the grayed ones to the later colored ones that came after….

Wow! This took me back. I remember these
Riding in them. The smell, the sound of the 6 cylinder sometimes with a nice exhaust and Baby Moons! Someone is going to get a real nice old classic.

To me, 67 was the best looking year for the Chevelles. This survivor is amazing in that it is a ‘bare bones’ car! I agree with most of the comments that this one should be left alone as far as modifications go. Fix the seats, put on stock hubcaps and just cleanup the original stuff! Drive it to coffee meets and it will garner as much attention as the muscle cars!! The buyer of this car should be someone who own a muscle car 67 Chevelle so you can show them together and see the differences!! Nice find and I am not an American car guy, even though I grew up with these cars!!
