Barn Benz: 1990 Mercedes-Benz 300TE

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1990 Mercedes-Benz 300TE was sitting for years, according to the seller. They also say “barn find sit 10 years”, so for some period of time it was apparently in some sort of storage facility somewhere. In any case, it looks like it’s in great condition, at least cosmetically and it’s listed on eBay with a current bid price of just over $1,600! It’s located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida so you can figure out the shipping costs, you won’t be flying in and driving this one home. The seller says that it has 16,499 miles on it, I’m just throwing that out there.. Thanks to Peter R for submitting this one!

26 years ago I had this same car only it was white and it wasn’t a wagon, or estate. I guess that makes it not the same car, it was actually a similar car. Anywho.. It was a great car and a TE / estate would have been so much better and more useful. The 300 series was based on the Mercedes-Benz W124 platform and they were way over-engineered. I had one glitch with my power moonroof and I think that’s about it. The major problem that I had was having the M-B three-pointed star hood ornament snapped off by punks who probably wore them around their necks as some sort of cool, early-90s Vanilla-Ice-like rapper thing. Sigh.. They were $40 a crack in the early-90s and I have no clue what they cost now but I’d probably just put a flush badge on there instead now.

I don’t really see a flaw in this car inside or out. The bumpers and exterior finishes, in general, are dull and could use a good spit-shine, polish, and wax, or however you normally bring your tired paint surfaces back to life. I don’t see any rust at all and there aren’t any underside photos. There isn’t much snow to speak of in Florida but the humidity and salt in the air from the ocean and the gulf can wreak havoc on vehicles. If this happened to be a 4Matic (AWD) it would be even more desirable, and scary, and complicated, and expensive to repair and maintain. I loved the single wiper on the front windshield of my 300E, it was almost evil-looking with the way it articulated and magically moved itself in odd angles with its eccentric cam to hit the corners of the windshield. And, of course, I loved the cool-and-now-outdated headlight wipers.

I’m assuming that this is MB-Tex (i.e., vinyl) upholstery instead of actual leather, that seemed to be the standard in those days. Like the exterior, the interior looks absolutely perfect to me. I have no idea what sort of mechanical or electrical issues the next owner will uncover with a car this complicated and intricate, having been in storage and not used for a decade or more. Hopefully rodents haven’t gotten into any part of the interior or the electrical system.

Ouch, look at those leaves at the base of the windshield! Was this car stored indoors for a decade or outdoors?! Scary. The dusty black thing is a 3.0L inline-six with a little over 200 hp and it would have been silky-smooth at one time. Hopefully it will be again. The next owner is going to want to do a full, detailed service on this car from front to back: full engine tune up and all rubber parts, brakes, fuel system, everything. It won’t be inexpensive but if this car can be purchased for a couple of thousand dollars, and maybe a thousand in shipping, maybe putting another couple of thousand dollars into bringing it back up to speed, you’ll be in business. You’ll be way ahead of Hagerty’s #3 “good” value of $7,100! This could be a very good bargain, no question, even with shipping charges. Would you take this car on and get it back on the road, or do you prefer simpler, non-wagon’y vehicles?

With the detail work and engin and trans check and possable work ! I would offer 1500.00 but i think it would make a nice driver, depends on the miles on the clock.

The 3 point star is now $95, and I’m on my third one, I hope the buggers strangle themselves if they hang it around their neck.
If this car is from copart or iaai auction, run. There will be no updated maintenance journal. Probably the wagon was seized from Fly By Knight Holdings. They would have to give me $42,000 to take it away.

Hmmm I really like these, but I would say this is in Fair condition at best. A lot of elbow grease *might* bring it up to Good. Funny how the seller seems to think sitting for 10 years is a selling point, as though it was getting beauty sleep. You can still get one of these in excellent shape for not too much, no need to risk the neglected ones.

This one goes in the “To good to be true” file. I’m not buying the 16,xxx claim

I simply don’t buy the “16,000 miles” claim. I base this on the engine and engine bay. There appears to be a lot more than just accumulated dust in there. It appears that there is a fair amount of grime, and a reasonable oil film on the top of that engine. Certainly more than you would expect from a car of this reputed mileage anyway.

one of my pet peeves for anyone selling any car are the leaves accumulated in the cowl, if you don’t care enough to clear them out, you must not want to sell the thing ( not just this one, take note next time you find a car that has been ” sitting”

Sagging rear seat, missing speaker cover, missing rear headrests, plug wires a mess, missing distributor cover, wiper parked on wrong side, hood insulation disintegrated, I could go on. No way this is less than 150,000 miles and poorly cared for at that. I have 2 of these and they are awesome cars, but you can find them in really nice shape for less than the bidding is up to so far.

I had a 230 one of these. It had 175000 on it when I bought it. A bit scabby in the UK climate (and a hard life at times) but ran it for 4 years of more or less faultess and v comfortable driving.still made yr ears pop when you shut the door the seals were still so good….. The slide S rather than E setting for the gears still made a differance. They are so popular here in the UK it was the sky insurance that made me part with it v sadly.
Now-good ones here are fetching on the way to 10k pounds here …. rough ones sold or stolen (know of 3 hence then the comment) go overseas. ….and mind…..sold it at a small profit at 190k and it’s still going somewhere so this is def a car worth saving !
