According to the ad, this 1970 VW Karmann Ghia has been sitting in a Sunnyvale, California barn since the 1990s. “The owner left it at his folk’s place tucked away in a shop and went on with his life and family.” The seller claims they pulled it from the barn and struck a deal, loading the car onto a trailer back to their hometown of Portland, Oregon. It can be found here on eBay with a current bid of nearly $8,000. The engine has been gone through and the car runs and drives, but it hasn’t been washed yet. Check out more of this cool Ghia!
Here you can see the engine has been cleaned up. The seller says they removed the fuel tank and cleaned it out. They removed the engine and drained the fluids. Any bolt-on accessory was removed and all of the gaskets were replaced. The carburetor was inspected and reinstalled. The ignition system received new points, cap, rotor, and plug wires. Aside from the engine, some other drive train components were addressed including replacement of the CV axles and boots.
The interior needs a good cleaning, but the seller says all the parts are there.
The ad says the car appears to be repainted at some point in the original white color. I’m not sure what led them to this conclusion but it is certainly possible. Hopefully, the repaint wasn’t to cover up a major accident. There is also a mention of some “minimal” rust but “nothing serious.”
These cars have a great profile, don’t they? Are you a fan of Karmann Ghia’s? Would you rather have a VW Bug, Bus, or Ghia?
If anyone is interested this isn’t very far from me. Let me know and will have a look. Mine is a ‘69 so same IRS and other bits am familiar with.
I’ve been looking for a 70 for my wife. Interested because it claims to run and drive. A little work is ok, but major restoration is not. If your serious about investigating, I would be all ears and much appreciative!
If yer gaunae go intae the the motor, why would you no’ gie it a wash?
1 lazy
2 want to show it was a real barn find
3 seller thinks the paint looks worse than what we imagine
Like seat covers. Always has me expecting and valuing for the worst case.
Aye
Nice project.Like the period exhaust.
Don’t worry about the dust, if you want a Ghia buy this as finding one this solid isn’t common. As for the profile when I bought mine in 1990, I thought the front looked a little stubby so I lengthened the wheelbase 5 inches. 32 years later I still have and love it. Now could be the time for you to start your long lasting love affair!
More details please
Looking for a cool driver for the Mrs.
This may be the one
Had one myself once and after the fenders rusted out s second time, I turned it into a dune buggie. Took the trunk lid.and installed it on the front, put the tail lights on the deck behind the rear window, put desert dog tires on the back and cragar mags in the front, removed the doors and bent up a 2 inch roll bar with cross pieces to strengthen the door openings, and removed the back seat. I topped it off with two tone primer paint job so it could be freshened up after a romp off road. Got a lot of looks with that car!
The Ghia is just under 8k with 2 days left. Would be a great buy at 8K but my guess is 12K plus when the bids are all in. 12K wouldn’t be a bad buy if a person can get it at that.
If it stays at $12k I might pick up a second. I like the IRS, stock seats, and no rust. They really are sweet to drive. Know that almost everything about them is the same as a bug, but they feel different.
Too bad, too far… I’d like to have a stylish car that gets good gas mileage and I don’t like new cars, so this one would fir nicely.
These are stylish, attractive cars when restored to stock or a mild retro mod. This car looks straight, a good deal.
Poor man’s 356.
SOLD for $9,700.
