While the XK and E-Type are some of the most sought-after models of Jaguar, the XJ was the brand’s bread and butter for decades. It’s easy to see why they are handsome saloons with a good combination of performance and luxury. This 2002 XJ8 is one of the last to be based on the XJ40 platform. It needs some cosmetic work but is in good mechanical condition. If you’d love to give it a new home, the seller is asking $4,000 with the option to make them an offer.

The XJ40 platform debuted in 1986 and saw two major revisions, first in 1994 and again in 1997. The final iteration was code-named X308 and had some mechanical and cosmetic changes but retained the XJ40’s chassis and overall looks. The biggest changes were to the interior and the powertrain.

The X308’s dash was more curved than the first XJ40s and featured round gauges. The overall styling was more in line with the XK8, which had debuted just a year before the X308 update hit the streets. The seller notes that this example shows some wear to the interior, but it doesn’t look too bad overall. The biggest issue appears to be wear on the driver’s seat, but replacement upholstery is available.

The XJ40 was initially developed only to accept Jaguar’s inline 6, but the brand eventually reworked the engine bay to fit their V12. This change allowed them to eventually fit the 4.0- Liter V8. While highly influenced by Ford, which owned Jaguar at this point, it was developed by Jaguar and has proven to be a great engine. This one should be good for about 280 horsepower and 290 lb-ft, which is plenty for a luxury cruiser.

This Jaguar is a project, but it’s priced reasonably and could be a great driver without much work. They are comfortable cars and offer a uniquely British driving experience. If you’d love to have it, be sure to make the seller an offer today!

Bought a used 2000 in this color scheme for my late father – his last car. Super-smooth and comfortable. IRS and aluminum body were interesting features not found in its contemporaries. Very peppy in manual shift mode, solidly built, and quiet as a bank vault. Perfect for long trips and closing out the angry world. A superb value in the sub-$5000 market. “Once around the park and home, James.”

Make sure the timing chain & tensioners have been changed

Were the tensioners a problem on these early 5.0 Ltr V8’s, too? My 2010 Rover’s tensioners failed at about this milage. Not sure why Ford decided to make them out of plastic …?
      Beautiful car.

I owned a 1999 XJ8 that I bought before finding out about the plastic tensioners that Jaguar inexplicably put into their engines until 2002. I took mine in for a coolant leak that I couldn’t find (a lot of the hoses are buried) and in the process the shop found that my tensioners were basically disintegrated. My car showed no signs of tensioner wear, yet I was potentially a key turn away from destroying my engine. As fate would have it, two months after the repairs were done, the transmission failed, and I ended my Jaguar experience much poorer than when I entered it.

I bought a 95 on BAT a few years ago. One owner named Nigel Price who was British Counsel in Denver. 4th Jag I’ve had, (Mk2, 2XJ6s & XJ12L) still has the 6. I love the ride, and the styling is timeless. Parts are becoming a problem. Needed diff bearings, Jag says “Not available, no estimate when production will resume”. Got all the specs for the bearings, went to BDI and found some that so far work fine, at 1/4 price of the unavailable Jag part.

A unique feature of bearings is that the number on the bearing is good worldwide. Once you have the number you can shop around for the best deal.

Deal! I have a 1999 XJ8 with 70K and it is a delight to drive and fairly easy to maintain. The best cruising/handling road car I have ever owned. Find one being sold by the original owner, look at the maintenance, get an inspection by a knowledgeable Jag shop, and then have fun. It is a Jag but Ford owned them and it has been bulletproof for 2 years. I did replace the coils and plugs but nothing else. The parts are more expensive but so is the car but nowhere near the hostage parts prices for newer cars. It is my wife’s favorite car for road trips.

Why is it a project? Nothing I noted in the pics.

Glenn, I did all that world wide, Welch and Tourist Trophy Garage did as well, no luck. What made this more difficult is the outer race is SAE, inside diameter is metric. Bearing Distributors Inc. found ’em for me. Thanks for taking the time to post that info!
