Boosted Hauler: 1986 Toyota SR5 Xtracab Turbo

The fourth-generation Toyota pickup was the first to offer their version of the extended cab which they called the Xtracab. This 1986 Toyota SR5 Turbo pickup has that Xtracab configuration and it also has a turbocharged engine. This great-looking truck can be found here on eBay in Oakman, Alabama with a current bid price of just under $5,000 and the reserve isn’t met yet.

We have seen a lot of small pickups here over the years and this turbo Toyota SR5 may be one of the easiest ones to live with on a daily basis. I’m probably like most people in that I think that I could actually go back to daily-driving an old car or truck, but once I wrangle one out of a random storage unit and drive it for a day or two, I realize that I may sadly be more of a vehicle hoarder than someone who could ever go back to regularly driving an old vehicle every day. Maybe if we lived in a small town it would be easier.

The fourth-generation Toyota Hilux was made for the 1984 through 1988 model years and the Hilux name had a little more than a two-and-a-half decade run in North America from 1968 until Toyota’s new Tacoma pickup came out in the mid-1990s. This truck looks about as close to being a time capsule as a 34-year-old truck could ever be, but they say that it was repainted and restriped four years ago so it isn’t all original. The underside looks rock-solid with just some surface rust.

One thing that I was hoping to see was a 5-speed manual, but you already knew that. The seller says that everything works great right down to the ice-cold AC. We don’t see inside the bed but I’d have to assume that it looks perfect in there. We also don’t see behind the seats but it looks like there are speakers back there and they say that the only non-original thing is the stereo system. The driver’s seat has a couple of stains and could use some work to build up the padding again, but that should be an easy and relatively inexpensive project.

The engine is Toyota’s 22R-TE, a fuel injected, turbocharged 2.4L inline-four with 135 hp. The seller says that they would drive this truck anywhere and I suggest that they drive it to our garage. Have any of you owned a small turbo pickup?

I owned one of these in black for many years. A very reliable and fairly quick truck. Rust, which was an issue with small trucks back then, finally did it in.

this cab is the 1 to have, turbo? hum, IDK…unless its as rock solid as the 22R, will need to look that up. Yeah, like to drive w/straight out arms’n legs, my fav looking vehicle (LOL – a truck 73/9 F250 SWB, step side 4WD) I can’t do that in. Driving (that monster compared to this 1) is like sittin at the kitchen table, bent arm/leg (altho there’s a king cab 4 them too, that would wrk). 5 speed is for sport or a wrk truck.

Some1 will geta charm here. Nice listin, bra! With ya Scotty, this would sit in a slot w/other DDs (auto is good!) if I had the rm

I test drove one of these in may of ’87 and it seemed like a little pocket rocket at the time. It got sold out from under me, and I ended up buying a brand new ’87 2wd normally aspirated HiLux. Good truck, but not nearly as much fun to drive.
These turbo models were around in the late ’80’s and early ’90’s here in SoCal, then just seemed to flat disappear, whereas the non- boosted models are still pretty commonly seen here. ( I see one in my backyard everyday).

This has to be a repaint. The stripe is not correct and these trucks had the California bed this one has been replaced with a Japanese bed.
