Breadvan Sports Car: Lotus Europa

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

While Lotus Europas aren’t exactly known for sleek lines (these early models are commonly known as “breadvans” due to their tall rear), the seller doesn’t help this one by not uncovering the center portion for any of the pictures. It’s currently in Mount Holly, New Jersey and is for sale here on craigslist for $3,300. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Benjamin for this find!

When I saw this picture, I recognized the Jaguar Mk. VII we featured in November in the background, so I’m guessing it hasn’t sold yet (although it’s grille may have). The seller correctly characterizes this early S2 Europa as rare in the US, although there aren’t that many Europas period, and for some reason they have not skyrocketed in value the way early Elans and Elites have.

The seller describes the rear body damage and includes pictures to show the detail. There’s a lot of fiberglass work to be done here. Although there isn’t an engine cover pictured, the seller will include a repairable one.

This is all we’re shown of the engine and transmission, although since the car was stored in a leaky barn, the engine has seized and there may well be other damage. There’s no windshield or rear bumper, and the seller notes some other things are missing as well (but doesn’t tell us what they are). The frame does look solid and the seller describes it as having only minimal surface rust. I found references to windshields being available at around $500 each and the rubber to install it with for another $150.

Even though I’m in the group that likes Europas, I’m not sure about this project, especially at the current price–I’d rather have a later twin-cam model with the cut-down sail panels. But maybe you feel differently? Let us know in the comment section below!

This reminds me of the barn door sale, just not as bad.

The Ad is gone already. I’m sure these have a following by some but, they always make me think they’re the El Camino of the sports car world.

Hello Barn Find readers, I put this post back on Craig’s List but: ??? This Car Might Be Sold ??? I did not get a deposit, but I am holding this for a gentleman making space in his garage. *** No Title *** I can help you get one *** No Title ***

The engine turns by hand 12/30/2015 I had the cylinders soaking in PB Blaster the last few weeks. The frame is in super condition, even the rear bulkhead / firewall is in decent shape. The doors operate nicely, the post / rods are not rusted, but the lower seat (adjustable) tracks / slides are shot.

BTW the grill for the MKVII is in the back seat.

Thanks for the update! Good luck with the sale! Is the Mk. VII still for sale as well?

Happy New Year Jamie, Yes the MK VII is still for sale. I haven’t tried to start it yet, but I’ve gotten one’s in poorer condition (if that’s imaginable) running in the past. South Jersey Craig’s List link: http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/5378874973.html

For those interested in more on these, there is a 2 page profile of a restored Twin Cam Special that sold at auction recently for $33K in the current SCM magazine (Jan 2016).
