Bring a Truck! No Reserve 1967 Mercury Cougar GT

One of the challenges often faced by enthusiasts restoring older classics is locating replacements for components that have gone AWOL. However, that may not be an issue with this 1967 Mercury Cougar GT. The seller states that the winning bidder will require a trailer to take home the car, and a truck to haul away the enormous selection of included additional parts. This would have been a potent vehicle in its prime, and everything appears to be there to recapture its glory days. The seller has listed the Cougar here on eBay in Kansas City, Missouri. They set their auction to open at $1,500, but have received no bids at the time of writing.

This Cougar would have been a stunning classic in its prime, ordered by its first owner in Lime Frost Metallic with a contrasting Black vinyl top. Time hasn’t been kind to it, with the exterior now looking tired, and the vinyl nothing but a distant memory. The seller states that the car was partially dismantled for a planned restoration, but this never eventuated. The removed parts are all present, along with a vast selection of additional components that will almost fill a truck. The photos suggest that a nut-and-bolt approach would be appropriate, allowing the buyer to return the body to a rust-free state. The process will include replacing the rear quarter panels and some areas of the floors, but this beauty appears to be structurally sound. Disassembling this Cougar would provide the option of sending the shell for media-blasting to expose any further shortcomings. It may seem like overkill to some, but it would potentially prove to be cheap insurance to limit the chance of future major rust problems. The distinctive grille is present, and the tinted glass looks suitable for reuse once cleaned.

The first owner apparently wished to combine comfort with excellent performance and a relatively effortless driving experience. They ordered the GT with the S-Code 390ci V8, a three-speed C6 automatic transmission, and power assistance for the steering and the front disc brakes. The 390 placed an impressive 320hp and 427 ft/lbs of torque below the driver’s right foot, ensuring that this Cougar would have held its own at almost any “Traffic Light Grand Prix.” The seller confirms that they are this classic’s second owner, having been its custodian for over forty years. The car retains its original engine, although it has been disassembled. A recent trip to the machine shop confirmed that the engine block is healthy and that the bore size is standard. That makes it a prime candidate for a rebuild that will unlock its full potential.

Mercury pitched the Cougar as a luxurious entrant in the pony car market, a fact that is backed by the Marti Report that forms part of this deal. This car left the factory equipped with air conditioning, an AM radio, the Courtesy Light Group, and a Tilt-Away wheel. The Black interior trim would have perfectly complemented the vinyl top, accentuating this car’s luxury leanings. The interior appears to be complete, but a full restoration is required. Like many classics from this era, trim kits are readily available in the correct materials and colors, allowing the new owner to return the inside of this GT to its factory form.

There was once a time when the Mercury Cougar was viewed as the Mustang’s poor cousin, with values languishing well behind equivalent examples of Ford’s iconic pony car. However, the classic world is an ever-evolving place, and the First Generation Cougar has found its feet. Values continue to climb as enthusiasts recognize that Mercury hit a sweet note, especially with these cars in their GT form. This 1967 example requires total restoration, but a potential value of well beyond $30,000 awaits the new owner if they achieve a high-end result. Are those thoughts enough to tempt you to tackle this build?

I can visualize this car when new, and it would have been stunning. Well-equipped, and eye-catching with its Lime Frost paint and black vinyl roof. The GT Equipment Group was a nice package. I hope someone takes it on as a project.

This looks like it could be a decent project for someone depending upon the reserve price. I would question it having all the original parts though. The headlight assembly shown is a 1968 assembly and the heads have 1968 part numbers.

This one is going to be a lot of work to fix up. Not sure how good the engine is if it has been apart for a while. The pictures show parts Some parts are to find such as correct distributor, carburetor, tilt away components and wiring, etc. Especially if you are concerned about date codes. However, if you can do most of the work yourself this Cat should be restored as the factory options are nice.

I know this from reviving a 1968 XR-7 GT that was missing a lot of engine parts. It was fun but took lots of patience to find the correct parts to restore to as it went to the dealer.

Be careful on this one. Seller claims in the auction text that it is a No Reserve auction, yet reserve is not met. I’m guessing that the seller pulled an earlier no reserve ad because it was going to go for cheap, and now has relisted it and never bothered to change the text.

Shenanigans like that are really a turn off.
