California Beach Find: 1974 Ford Bronco

Classic Ford Bronco prices have continued to rise over the past decade or so. They were trending up like a lot of other 60s and 70s trucks and SUVs, but the re-introduction of the Bronco in the past few years has driven them even higher. This 1974 model would have probably been sub-$10,000 years ago but is now worth well more than that. It can be found here on eBay with an asking price of $35,000. Located in Hermosa Beach, California, the seller says it is a solid California truck. Let’s take a closer look.

Based on the ad, I’m guessing the seller of this Bronco is a dealer or flipper. They say “We just found this 1974 Bronco…” and they put some new parts on it that seem to be good investments for a quick resale. The interior has new door panels, a dash pad, and seat covers.

As for the drivetrain, the seller says they put a carburetor on the 302 engine and went through the brakes. The Bronco now runs and drives, but the ad does say that they recommend going through the suspension and exhaust because they are both original and “should be replaced.” I don’t know if they are talking more about the exhaust or the suspension or both.

Overall, the body doesn’t look terrible, but there are some rough spots. The rear quarter panels haven’t been trimmed, which is a great thing. Also, there doesn’t appear to be a ton of rust in the rockers, which is a bonus. Hopefully, this one will find a new home where the new owner can invest a little time and money to get it back to where it deserves to be. Although, I’m not sure if it will sell at this price. What do you think?

Being by the ocean,I’d want to inspect it for rust. That salt air
is nasty stuff.I saw an MGA coupe parked near the ocean in
Trinidad,CA,uncovered,& there wasn’t much left of it.

Lot of wrinkles in those rockers. Body filler?

At $35K, I will be surprised if anyone other than their next door neighbor will have time for an inspection.

My neighbor had one which was a 72 with manuel shift. He didn’t keep it very long because he said it was a gas hog, and uncomfortable to drive.

yeah, they’re not comfortable to drive (I been @ it 42 yrs last fall). Worse is they’re a death trap w/o a frame tied cage/bar(s). No ‘hard prts’ above the “bed top line”. BUT…

R fun, useful (true dual purpose), enjoyable to wrench on or mod, have every single part after mrkt (just like stang), some (w a y less than jeep) aftr mrkt upgrades, and like others (harley, zuki) a great community. Because of the dual purpose they can do several things ok, nothing well – thus the mods to personnalize to APPLICATION. Only thing – some wanna rd race & I’d say that’s the 1 thing U dont wanna do – a 1’n 1/2 T (3,500lb) square box…

It may be in California now but that is not where it started out being. The DSO shown on the door data plate is 17, which would be an east coast DSO, Philadelphia as I recall. Plus that is a 1994 PA inspection sticker on the windshield.

It goes to show one has to be careful of what he is buying, as Cathouse was pointing out that the Bronco spent some time in PA.
