Carport Survivor: 1971 Dodge Super Bee

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Super Bee was Dodge’s equivalent of the Plymouth Road Runner, a budget-minded muscle car. For its first three years (1968-70), the Super Bee was based on the Coronet. For its final outing in 1971, the Dodge Charger was the basis for the layout. The seller’s ’71 edition is one of just 5,054 copies made and comes with a 4-speed manual. Located under a carport in Los Angeles, California, this cosmetic project is available here on eBay for a flat $16,000.

Even though Dodge was considered the performance arm of Chrysler Corp., the Super Bee sold in smaller numbers than the similar Road Runner. Perhaps the less flamboyant name was part of it, as “Super Bee” stood for the B-body platform designation, while the Road Runner had years of prior cartoon promotion by Warner Brothers for the bird’s “meep meep” sound, and Wiley Coyote always on the hunt.

The seller here is both a collector and marketer of classic cars and trucks. We assume this Dodge is from his/her own harem, and we’re told it runs strong. It comes with a 383 cubic inch “Magnum”, which may or may not be original to the Bee. The indicated mileage is 36,000, so either the car was used little from year to year or the clicker is on its second time around. We’re told there or no leaks, but there are some electrical issues to be sorted out (what issues?)

“Striking” is the seller’s word used to describe the red paint, but it sounds optimistic to me. On the other hand, the black interior may be presentable. We’re told that the Dodge may only need minimal efforts to be a weekend cruiser, though a “light” restoration would be more probable. If 10% of these Super Bees have survived (just a guess), could this be one of just 500 left to show off in some form or another?

The seller never provides descriptions of his cars and does not seem to know much about what he is selling.

That’s a radio delete bezel that’s been cut for an aftermarket stereo. The original radio had both knobs on one side.

Those seats aren’t stock, probably had a bench from the factory. Decent body, decent price, way too far away from me.

Factory seats, be it a bench it buckets would be better than what’s in there now. This Super Bee should make for a good project, it’s complete, looks straight and rust free, has a good color combination and is a 4spd with a pistol grip.

The ad is horrible, it comes across like it was written by a listing agency that knows nothing about cars which uses a bunch of meaningless words and phrases. The price is probably too high, of the roughly 430 listing completed over the last 90 days there have only been 6 sales.

I think it’s safe to assume thats not the original engine or an HP/magnum since it’s blue, pre 69 HP engines were turquoise and 69-71 were orange.
