Missing the rare-to-find carrying bag and with a much smaller replacement seat, but looking like a pretty easy restoration project, this 1964 Fuji Go-Devil Portable Mini Bike can be found here on Facebook Marketplace in Jasper, Georgia. These aren’t for everyone, but the seller is asking a mere $600! Here is the original listing, and thanks to PRA4SNW for the tip! As a price comparison, here is one on eBay for $3,900, and another on eBay for $7,000!
Some of you did a spit-take when I said a mere $600, as prices usually seem to be the biggest hang-up for most folks. We all remember when prices weren’t crazy like they are today. I know from traveling a lot that hotel prices are up probably 50% in the last handful of years, and we’ve all seen vehicle prices go through the roof the last decade or so. Still, $600 for this little, portable, carryable, folding Fuji Go-Devil is rock bottom, even with having to track down a couple of missing parts. Here’s a nice, color page showing some specs for this unusual 70-pound scooter.
I wouldn’t use the $7,000 eBay listing as a typical selling price, but somewhere between $2,500 and $5,000 for a really nice condition example is probably about right. For $600, if the seller would break this one down into the little cube it folds into for carrying on a plane or in your trunk, this one is pretty tempting. As far as a restoration project, there is no swoopy gas tank or side covers to worry about, just a plain square tube metal frame and some other bits to restore. Easy, no?
Fuji (yes, that Fuji, as in Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries) made the Go-Devil mini bike/scooter between 1964 and 1967 or so, and they were able to be disassembled and folded into a little cube, which then was carried in an uber-rare bag for air travel or other travel. Here’s an owner’s manual, showing how it breaks down into a cube. We’ve only seen one Fuji Go-Devil, last December here on Barn Finds. You’d better sit down after clicking that link: the seller was asking $12,000 for that one.
The engine is a 49-cc Fuji two-stroke single with 2.5 to 3 horsepower, which is sent through the centrifugal clutch system to the rear wheel. Speaking of no designed gas tank to restore, this one is missing the gas tank! So the $600 price got a little more painful. I’m sure most folks could find a mini bike or even lawnmower gas tank that would fit and work fine, but I’d want to track down an original tank. This one “ran when parked,” which the seller knows is an old story, but it’s true. I can’t believe it would be hard to get this one humming again, and this would be a fun little restoration project. Have any of you seen a Fuji Go-Devil scooter?
How do I get this on the airplane? I think they might get huffy about a gallon of gasoline in my carry on.
Ha, I probably should have said private planes, charter flights, you know, the stuff that we all do all the time (cough)… Sort of like Honda’s CL100 Suitcase Cycle from the 1970s.
