Cheap and Nice 1973 Ford Maverick

Sometimes a tip comes across our desks here at Barn Finds that seems like such a good deal that it makes sense to jump on it immediately, and this one had been listed here on Craigslist for only about an hour when I began writing this post.  The Maverick was a compact offered by Ford from 1970 through 1977, and it didn’t really change much throughout its 8 years in production.  Although many considered it just basic transportation in the seventies, these have sort of developed a cool factor over the years, and finding nice examples isn’t exactly commonplace anymore.  This 1973 Maverick is located in Butler, Pennsylvania, and priced at an affordable $3,000.  We’d like to thank reader Tony Primo for finding this one just as it became available, and for sending in this tip so quickly!

The 2-door examples can be made to look somewhat sporty, and while the seller doesn’t go into much detail about this car’s past, he seems to be on the right track by describing it as being in very good condition.  There’s no word on what sort of body work has been done, or if the sheet metal has always been this straight.  Fortunately, no obvious areas are visible outside that look like any rust might be present, and I’m not seeing any reason not to consider just driving this one as-is.

It would be nice to find a V8 already under the hood, but fortunately, the base 170-cubic-inch inline-6 offered the previous year was discontinued, and the optional 200 I-6 became standard equipment in 1973.  Everything in the bay appears to be in good order, and the owner says the engine runs great, plus there’s also a manual transmission that most potential buyers will probably appreciate.  I’m guessing some enthusiasts will likely be eager to replace this with a V8, but if it’s dependable and roadworthy, there’s certainly no urgency to do so immediately.

Unfortunately, no interior shots are provided, so the condition inside remains a mystery.  However, even if it could stand some attention, the low initial cost should leave enough funds leftover to make some improvements in here.  The stripe around the rear section is a fun addition, and the aftermarket wheels here really help make this one stand out.  Just cleaning up those tires and applying a shiny coating would improve the exterior’s appearance, and I might buy a can and stop there for a while.  How do you envision moving forward with this 1973 Ford Maverick?  Is this one as reasonably priced as I’m sensing?

Looks like a very clean solid Maverick. If I had it, I’d just keep the 6 and a stick and enjoy it. Its so funny, a younger me would’ve never considered a 6 cylinder Mustang, Maverick, Camaro or anything else. But now, I’d be happy to have one like this. Thanks Mike.

Thanks for the great write-up! I would return it to stock or at least OEM wheels, and do something in the front grill / bumper area. Something looks missing or misplaced in that area. There is too much space between the grille and bumper, and grille and hood. It seems very reasonably priced. Could be a lot of fun to drive and take to cars and coffee.

Had a friend that bought a new Maverick when he returned from Nam. A 6 cylinder Grabber, blue and black. Ran pretty well for just having the 200/6. I always thought it looked impressive. This one would look better without the stripe. It’s all wrong for this car.

The chrome valve cover adds 10HP :P Those 200’s can be built up nice to provide competent modern performance. The 1973 front bumper isnt too bad..it had not grown to park bench size yet.Great price for a great car.

I had a Mercury Comet – the cousin to this car – they were awesome cars back in the day. Nothing wrong with this Ford as it sits. Simple to work on and simple to own – enough said!
