Cheap Wheels Project: 1992 Plymouth Laser

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Plymouth Laser and its badged-engineered cousins, the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon, were the first new products to emerge from Diamond-Star Motors. DSM was a partnership between Chrysler and Mitsubishi, which included a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Bloomington, Illinois (I was there once). The seller has a non-running Laser from 1992 that may be a “cheap wheels” opportunity for a good shade-tree mechanic. In a garage in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, this Mopar (?) is available here on craigslist for $2,900. An attaboy goes to Mitchell G. for yet another tip!

Plymouth Lasers were on the market for five years and, for whatever reason, did not sell as well as their pair of siblings. The company hired singer Tina Turner to help promote the Laser, which Plymouth tried to push as a performance-type car like the Barracuda and Duster from 20 years earlier. A 5-speed manual transmission was standard, paired with either 1.8 or 2.0-liter 4-cylinder powerplants. Horsepower ranged from 92 to 195, depending on the motor and whether a turbocharger was involved. Sales declined from one year to the next, so Plymouth threw in the towel in mid-1994.

The seller goes to little trouble with his/her presentation of this Plymouth. Only three unique photos are provided and do not include the interior or the driver’s side of the vehicle. At 213,000 miles (well worn?), the only thing the seller says about the hatchback is that it “always ran good” and “just needs started,” which tells me whoever listed the car has limited info.

How great American companies died right before our eyes hurts my soul.

Counterpoint: the top of the line AWD turbo models are legends, and gave young men (and some older ones!) a reason to want a new Plymouth.

Hey Stan, you think Plymouth actually had that color name in the brochure? Lol.

They could’ve called it “Fun Frigidaire™️ White” Driveinstile lol.

When I had my Chrysler minivans, on a rare occasion, I had to buy something from the dealer. Walking to the parts dept. one of these had its interior guts strewn all over creation. I had to ask the mechanic,,oops, I mean, technician grappling with that nightmare, what ya’ fixing? I asked. His grumpy reply, heater core, so it wasn’t just the Mustang.

My son bought one of these at auction years ago. 2L/auto. Pale gold. It was actually a comfortable, pleasant car to drive.
