Indestructible 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser 80

The 80-Series Toyota Land Cruiser is a modern classic that you can drive every day, and after seeing a slight dip in prices after the pandemic boom deflated, it seems solid examples are picking back up. This truck is a 1994 model with under 120,000 miles and as a California truck, it also has excellent cosmetics. With a bulletproof drivetrain, great styling, and third-row seating, the 90s-era Land Cruiser offers an ideal compromise of a truck that will be appreciated for some time to come by enthusiasts while also totally usable as a daily. Find this 1994 model here on eBay with bids to $14,100 with the reserve unmet.

The 80-Series market really heated up in 2020 and 2021, as more and more people began looking for an escape hatch related to the lock-down. Really, anything with 4WD that could be used for overlanding or camping became popular, but the Land Cruiser was already on the cusp of being a bit of an item before everyone decided they were ready to go on a safari. This reflected both an ongoing appreciation for 90s-era vehicles and the incredibly high price modern Land Cruisers (and their Lexus twin) have been commanding for some time. If you want to get into a Land Cruiser made in the last 10 years, be prepared to spend near $50K or better for a truck with over 100K miles.

The Land Cruiser shown here was made in the early part of the production run for the 80-Series, which can be identified with the non-airbag steering wheel and cloth seats. Leather would become standard or practically standard on later models; I can’t recall seeing an 80-Series made after 1995 that didn’t have leather. The upholstery in these trucks is not great, and almost every truck with leather and non-timewarp mileage has had its front seats redone, so the fact that this one has cloth is actually a plus in my book. The cabin looks quite tidy overall, with no major flaws to report.

The 4.5-liter inline-six is one of the better engines Toyota has ever built, known for being near bulletproof and capable of racking up 300K miles or better. The seller notes that this truck has a “towing package” which I am not familiar with, but it does appear to have a factory-style tow hitch and bar. The only deviations from stock condition include a set of BF Goodrich all-terrain tires and an aftermarket stereo with Bluetooth controls. Interestingly, this truck also appears to have the JDM-market running boards, which suggest it has been enthusiast-owned given most folks don’t know about that OEM option. This is a nicely-maintained 80-Series with good miles and clean condition, and certainly worth more than the current bid price.

Remove those running boards, they are nothing but damage multipliers.

Beautiful looking Land Cruiser. This is my favourite generation of the Toyota Land Cruiser.

California vehicle or not, we’d check it good for frame rot. These were notorious for that in the rust belt areas of the country.
