If you’ve been searching for a vintage project that’s off the beaten path, this 1966 AMC Marlin in Aldergrove might be worth a closer look. Listed on craigslist, it’s said to be a complete, numbers-matching car with the original 327 cubic inch V8 still in place. The seller claims all the metal work has already been completed, and the floors are solid with no rust issues. It’s a promising foundation for anyone looking to restore a seldom-seen ‘60s fastback. You can check it out here on craigslist.

American Motors introduced the Marlin in 1965 as a fastback answer to the muscle cars coming out of Detroit. It shared much of its underpinnings with the Rambler Classic but wore a distinctive roofline and upscale trim to help it stand out. By 1966, AMC had refined the look and improved the car’s performance options, with the 327 V8 being the most desirable engine of the bunch.

This particular example isn’t running yet—the seller notes the 327 needs a rebuild—but that’s to be expected at this stage in the project. What’s important is that it’s all there, including the engine and drivetrain, which gives it value to restorers and collectors alike. Numbers-matching cars are always in demand, and with the harder work reportedly done (including metal repair and rust mitigation), it’s well-positioned for the next phase.

There’s not much detail offered on the interior or trim condition, so buyers will want to inquire about those areas. Photos could help verify whether it’s complete or if some sourcing is required. That said, the fact that the seller has the paperwork is a big plus—especially with rare cars where titles can be hard to come by.

The Marlin isn’t a mainstream muscle car, and that’s part of its charm. Its distinctive shape and low production numbers make it a standout at local events or marque-specific shows. If you’re the type who enjoys owning something a little different—and are up for a mechanical project—this could be a rewarding build.

Would you take on this uncommon AMC fastback and bring it back to the streets?

Wow, what a cool car. I love these. If the metal work is really solid this shouldn’t last long. You don’t get much for $2,200 anymore. Wish I was ready for the next project.

And that is actually $1,608 U.S. dollars.

The ad is 60+ days old, it’s not resonating with potential buyers. It’s affordable, but that doesn’t seem to matter.

Not much market for AMCs in Canada and lately people are reluctant to cross the border.

Finally a reasonable price, but you can see. Some people THINK you should give it to them.

Must have been a year or so ago but I found a 1966 amc marlin in Arkansas that,
    Power locks
    Power windows
    Power brakes
    Power steering
    Air conditioning
Center console and it might have had the bigger engine, the guy was selling two others with it or separately, it must have been real rare with all the options but I wasn’t close and it was a big project for me, I think it was $6000 or $9000.

I think it would be cool with a 4 speed. Did they come that way? I have seen several of these in person and in adds. But all have been automatic transmissions. I’m a sucker for these fastback cars, the original Charger, original Baracudas (I’ve had 3) , even original RX7s, original XKE coupes (hate the look of the 2+2) and many others Can’t seem to get enough fastbacks!

If you have the skills this is a great project. I don’t know how many parts are reproduced for these like the more popular cars so that can become a scavenger hunt for used parts. You’re right Elizabeth, you’ll definitely have something different when you’re done.
