Sport Package Survivor: 1990 BMW 325is

As someone in a  long-term relationship with a 1987 BMW 325is, I’m a big fan of sport package-equipped E30s. This car is perhaps the most desirable configuration, with the smaller bumpers that came on later models. Of course, I like the old-school ones with the huge air dam, but to each their own. This car is quite nice, one of the few remaining that hasn’t been modified and even rides on stock suspension. Find it here on eBay with bidding at $17,000 and no reserve.

$17K is a very impressive numberthough far from uncommon these days. While you can still buy a 3-Series of this generation for $5K or less, sport package cars are the smart buy if you’re hunting for one as an investment. The reason they are so popular has much to do with the fact that BMW made a pretty damn good sport package back in the day, with firmer suspension, a limited slip, awesome sport seats, and more, along with the fact that upkeep is famously cheap.

Yes, it is – really. BMW used the M20 inline-six in many cars over the E30’s production span, and parts are still widely available. Known trouble spots are the same for every BMW, which primarily consists of the cooling system and consumable suspension components. Of course, neglected cars can develop weeping headgaskets and leaking oil pans, but neither of those are a concern on a specimen as clean as this one. Look at the engine bay – practically spotless without being over-detailed.

Inside, you’ll find one of the best sport steering wheels in the business along with a tight-shifting 5-speed manual. The seats are amazing and this E30 sports a desirable (and increasingly hard to find) crack-free dashboard. The factory Premium Sound stereo is surprisingly good for a stock unit, and aside from some light soiling on the OEM floormats, there’s very little to fault here – and bidders seem to agree. This Bimmer has got it all! I was really surprised buy the sticker price back in 1990, A ton of coin back then. Another surprise was that both docs in the Ebay ad states this car came with an auto, happy to see it was swapped at some point. I was checking on a 1990 535i 5 speed today. Thankfully not as expensive as this. Great find!

To me one of the last BMW’s that was fun to drive. BMW’s after this just got fat and bloated, but these were just fun. Tail happy for sure, but you could control the slide. The M3 was no doubt faster, but not by much and it was made up in the cost of maintaining this vs an M3.
I’m semi surprised by the price, but glad to see some later cars get some love.
