Crate 350 V8: 1972 Chevrolet El Camino

Disclosure: Barn Finds may receive compensation from clicks and purchases. Use caution when purchasing vehicles long distance. We recommend inspections before sending money.

The El Camino was revived in 1964 on the new mid-size Chevelle platform and was still based on a 2-door station wagon. The whole Chevelle line got a redesign in 1968, and the period from then until 1972 may have been its heyday (at least in terms of performance). The seller has a nice 1972 El Camino with a newer crate 350 cubic inch V8 and TH-350 transmission. It’s a daily driver with a few age-related issues. Located in Tumwater, Washington, this “gentleman’s pickup” is available here on craigslist for $16,250. Thumbs up to “Curvette” for the tip!

El Camino sales reached their peak thus far in 1972 and that included the GMC badged version, the Sprint. The Super Sport had been an option on the El Camino during this generation, though this nice example is not one and might be considered a clone. Lots of El Camino’s came with the 350 V8, so the replacement here may be more or less period correct. The overall vehicle has at least 100,000 miles, though we don’t know how many the drivetrain has picked up.

Over the years, the seller has replaced a lot of parts, which are “too many to list”. Which is a shame, because such a list might help his/her phone ring more rather than leaving an unanswered mystery. The paint is a redo, 30 years old, and looks good in the photos, but has a few problems starting to brew. The interior is said to be mostly new, and some digital instrumentation has been added where the radio would go.

The seller will consider a trade but must net $10,000 in cash. His wish list includes several high-end motorcycles and a Jeep Wrangler. So, if you have any of these you’re willing to part with, acquiring this nice Chevy won’t be so costly. It’s said to be a great runner, so your decision will be to only show the pickup or haul an occasional load.

Anyone remotely interested needs to see this car in person. It doesn’t look bad and the price could be reasonable if nothing significant is wrong. It’s had a lot of changes, none egregious in nature.

Someone could wind up with a utilitarian “Chevelle” adjacent car for not a lot of money.

Would be a really nice car if they hadn’t ruined it by trying to pass it off as an “SS”. Stop it with all the tributes/counterfeits.

And enough with changing the steering wheels, too!

Things could be worse. The steering wheel could be one of those tiny chain-link things. And there’s no fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror. And I agree about the clone/tribute thing. The collector will know the difference, and a passerby couldn’t care less.

The only the grill emblem says SS, nothing else, that will take no more than 2 minutes to unbolt.

        That’s hardly the point. SMH

Then what is your point? This is far from being a clone, it’s nowhere close to being a “clone/tribute”. The steering wheel is a 15 minute fix. This appears to be a nice looking car at a reasonable price which is hard to find. You can’t expect every person to share your tastes, there is no reason to get mad when they don’t.

It’s nothing to remove the SS from the grille, which is what I would do, and yeah, that steering wheel…

“Clean 1972 Chevrolet El Camino. Not a SS, newer crate 350/t350.”

Does he mean trade plus cash, or cash or trade? $10k isn’t a lot to have this head-turning daily driver (which is what it would be if I had it) in one’s driveway. Also enticing for me, it’s just a stone’s throw from my area.

Speedometer shows a little over 20 mph with nobody in the driver’s seat!

      Johnny,
Well that explains why the total mileage is north of 100k. Poor darn wannabe pickup truck has been doing 20mph it’s whole life!
Sure am pleased with the worthwhile ongoing discussion about clones.
I’m all cleared up about this.
      Whew!

        Nothing too wrong with them. I had a Clogne 2.8 v6 in a 74 Mustang 2.

        Clongne smells good too.

good looking 14k camino. i would want to see the underside though. very disappointing to see the dash hacked up for a radio and gauges. being a chevy i am sure they reproduce it. i would have h just put in the factory gauges and been done. that hideous steering wheel needs to go. never understood why they would not use a factory sport wheel. the workmanship under the hood looks a bit questionable with the wires and everything else. i would more appealing if looked more like a factory install. if it’s as clean as they say it would be a solid buy

You would need to be a NASA rocket scientist to figure out that under hood wire harness. Is that some kind of heat shrink amperage bleed off contraption ? . Figure a new plastic dash and new factory oem wire harness into purchase price.

Appears to be wiring for the electric cooling fans. Why it needs electric cooling fans and the OE fan is not in place is anyone’s guess.

Lots of people do that to free up a few HP.

As my dad used to say. “It’s a Boars nest”.

Yeah, I’m pretty much agreeing with the general consensus verbally stated with in this forum.
This little C10 crossbred Chevelle pickem’ up truck is “maybe” worth closer to the figure the owner is needing in the cash number.
I’m physically close to It’s location however I’m done.
    Good luck all!!

Nice looking driver quality cartruck with a only few blemishes. The main issue I see is the speedometer which most likely needs rebuilt. The steering wheel is a simple fix. I would say it’s a $14,000-$15,000 vehicle.

Nice looking Camino in black/white combination with the Rallys. Not a terrible ask either…it’d be a nice driver. Who cares about a couple extra emblems? Wiring? Most buyers are gonna wanna change stuff to make it their own anyway. Reminds me of an old saying…quitcherbelyakin! Not perfect, if it was it’d be unaffordable anyway.
